As I See It
Dear Alumni,
Let’s begin with what sounds like a math problem: I have forty-five seventh grade history students this year. Remarkably, eight of them are parts of Allen-Stevenson brother trios. What is the probability of this? How many times have I had so many brothers (oldest, middle, or youngest) of such trios in the same grade? Never, I think. I had three boys of a triple last year, but as I look back, I can only remember a few. Eight in one grade! Wait, there’s more. There are ten boys in the class who are halves of two-brother acts; also, one first cousin of an alumnus; three sons of alumni; and one grandson of an alumnus. What am I to make of all these numbers? What is the sum of all this consanguinity?
Does it pull them together? While I only know them remotely, on a screen, and in groups of eleven or twelve, they do seem to get on well - as brothers do - when engaged; and as we take up American history in a more teched-up way, they are ever helpful and patient with each other. This morning, for example, one of my students was having computer issues in calling up the document he needed for our class work. He was getting increasingly upset. The other boys calmly and quickly rallied around him and gave him the support he needed.
Ah, that’s it. After all my carrying on about the math of brother constellations, this is what I really want you to know: Like A-S seventh graders before them whose lives were upended by epidemic or war, these boys are looking out for one another, brothers, in the best of ways.
Fortiter et Recte,
David Kersey h'98

Benjy Sarlin '00 of NBC and Will Rahn '02 of Yahoo News, political reporters on the national scene, visited Middle and Upper School students for a live discussion and Q&A on the presidential election.
They spoke to the boys about what it means to be a political reporter and how to remain unbiased.
The boys came away from this exercise well informed about our country’s political system and why every voice is important.
