“The essence of the problem is to select a promising course of action with an acceptable degree of risk and to do it more quickly than our foe. In this respect, 'a good plan violently executed now is better than a perfect plan executed next week.'”

FROM THE PRESIDENT

23 July 2026

Dear Marines:

At the end of May, I was invited to the Division’s Change of Command Ceremony at Camp Pendleton and attended with my wife, Diana and Dennis from our office along with SgtMaj Vasquez. I was delighted to be included in that event. Gen Priddy (the current CG of 1stMarDiv) made a speech, so I now know a little about him. After the ceremony, I spent some time with Dennis in the office. June hasn’t been feeling well recently, and our office has become mostly a one-man operation.

Several months ago, Dennis had suggested a retired Warrant Officer as a possible new Warrior Liaison (SgtMaj Vasquez is now titled Warrior Liaison emeritus). I did meet this man during my visit to the So Calif Chapter’s regular meeting late last year. So far, he’s the only potential – I had been thinking that perhaps either a recently retired or soon to be retired active-duty career Marine might be our best choice. But now feel enough time has passed and I’m getting ready to offer the position to him if he’s willing. If any others should be considered, let me know..

We will also like to bring in a part-time volunteer to assist Dennis in the office. The two local women that helped at last year’s reunion are available with limited hours.

That brings you up to date with the office. Just before the Executive Committee met at the hotel in San Diego back in March, Jerry Corrento (a past President) resigned as our Treasurer mostly due to health issues and limited ability to travel. I decided to take over those responsibilities until “the books” were brought up to date, and then select a replacement for Jerry to become our next Treasurer. I’ve received all avail transaction records from the office, Jerry and AJ Burns (another past President) and previous treasurer, and will be compiling them into financial reports soon.

Association Treasurer is typically an elected position, but because of Jerry’s unexpected resignation, an appointment will be made. I am now reaching out to our membership for those who are willing to serve. The daily, routine work in done in the office with the treasurer being responsible for periodic reports to the Executive Committee and General Membership. If interested, please email your resume to: ReconBn70@gmail.com

Susan Finnigan has been doing a great job of organizing our reunion. She’s been able to get outstanding cooperation from the hotel and has been working diligently with senior staff at Camp Pendleton and MCRD for our visits there during the reunion in addition to other local tours around San Diego.

Advance registrations seem to be a little better than at this same time last year – we’re now four weeks away. We do need to get more of our members signed up for the Sat night banquet.

Again, the reunion dates are: August 24-30 and the hotel website for our reservations is: https://www.hilton.com/.../attend.../1stmarine79threunion/ Use our group code is: 91J to get special rate.

Additionally, you can register for the re-union itself by using: https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/ticketing/79th-annual-reunion I’m expecting this to be our best reunion in several years.

You can use that same website to buy a few tickets for our 50/50 Raffle, to be drawn at our Reunion banquet. Winner need not be present.

Dennis informed the Executive Committee during our last business meeting that only about ¼ of our members are on an email list. I would expect that most do have email service and just haven’t informed the office of their email address – please do so, regular postage is not only becoming expensive, it’s rather slow. The office email address is: dennis.oldbreed@fmda.us

Our bank balance is basically “holding” so there’s no immediate need to panic, however expenses are higher than in the past and we need more revenue to secure our future as an operating association. I’m optimistically projecting the reunion to be at/near a “break even” point (we’ve made commitments for the banquet & bus companies that will be paid regardless of attendance). Again, I’m asking that some of our Lifetime Members consider sending voluntary contributions to our association. Some lifetime & dues paying members have already been sending monthly or quarterly contributions (any amount is good).

I’ve created a Zelle method for your convenience, the recipient email id necessary for us to receive Zelle payments is: 1stMarineDivAssoc@gmail.com there is absolutely no fee whatsoever for either the donor or our association, and all transactions should be completed in less than five minutes. This new payment option is in addition to the existing choices which will all remain available (credit cards, mailing checks, etc).

Additionally, it would be extremely helpful if any of the local chapters were able to provide the association with periodic contributions.

Finally, with a heavy heart we say goodbye to one of our best. Colonel Len Hayes has passed away. He was awarded the Silver Star and Bronze Star in Vietnam, was past Executive Director of this Association, and essential to our Scholarship Fund. Our condolences to his family.

Col Len Hayes

October 25, 1939 - May 28, 2026

Leonard Claude Hayes, (Len), age 86, of Oceanside, California, passed away on May 28, 2026 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on October 25, 1939, in Alhambra, California, the son of Rexford Hayes and Berenice Riley.

He graduated from California High School in 1957 and graduated from Whittier College in 1961, earning his bachelor’s degree and later his master’s degree.

After Len became a commissioned officer in the Marine Corps he married Bernice Bungard in 1963. Together they had three sons, Jeffrey, Carey, and Brian. Len retired from the Marine Corps in 1992.

Len served two tours in the Vietnam War. (1965-1966 and 1968-1969). His first tour was as an infantry platoon commander and Company Executive Officer with Delta Company, 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment. During this tour he was awarded the Silver Star Medal, the country’s 3rd highest combat decoration. He served his second tour as the company commander of Fox company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment. During this period he was awarded the Bronze Star.

During his 30 years of service he commanded at the Company level, Battalion level (3rd Battalion, 5th Marines), as well as commanding 1st FFSG. He also completed the National War College. After retirement he went on to serve as a civil servant with the Orange County California Marshal’s Office and eventually he became the head of the county’s emergency management department. During this time he was also the Executive Director of the 1st Marine Division Association.

For 37 years, Len was Lynne’s partner, best friend, and the love of her life. They built a life filled with adventure, laughter, and countless cherished memories. They spent time exploring new places, walking along the harbor with their beloved dogs and peaceful days horseback riding. Len was one of Lynne’s biggest supporters of her dream, standing beside her every step of the way as she built Horse Spirit Ranch. He was a devoted stepfather to their beautiful daughter, Christina, loving her as his own and taking great pride in the woman she became.

He was also a caring and attentive grandfather who treasured every moment spent with his grandchildren. His kindness, patience, and gentle spirit left a lasting impression on all who knew him. Len lived a life marked by adventure, including riding a motorcycle across the country. Len will be remembered for his generosity and his willingness to help those in need, for his love for his family and his country, and for his larger than life personality.

Leonard is survived by his devoted wife, Lynne, his stepdaughter, Christina Jones (Sylvester) and his grandchildren, Kayla, SJ, and Shlomo, his sons Carey(Angelina) and Brian(Viktoriya), his brother Roger(Jane) and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
