Colorful autumn leaves floating on the surface of a pond

Photo by Zen Master Jeong Bong

There’s something special about this time of year. The hot summer air has mellowed to a cool crispness, and we’re treated to the vibrant colors of autumn as nature sheds her leaves in an explosion of reds, oranges and yellows.

In the next few weeks their colors will fade and become muted. If we think of them only as dead leaves, we’re missing the big picture. Although their physical appearance will eventually become unrecognizable, nothing will be lost.

Just as we traditionally nourish ourselves with root vegetables and other foods preserved from the harvest, the earth absorbs nutrients from the leaves and sustains itself for next spring’s reawakening.

If we can perceive the continuity of life beyond physical appearances, we may recognize this year’s fallen leaves in next year’s buds.

Feel free to say, “Hi.”

Yours in the Dharma,

Jeong Bong

Food Bank Collection Bin — Beginning in November

Sangha member Rich Hill has placed a plastic bin on the back porch at the Zen Center to collect donations for the University District Food Bank. You’re invited to place non-perishable food items in the bin at any time. Rich will ensure they're delivered to the food bank for our neighbors in need!

Residential Training Opportunity

Blue Heron Zen Community has an opening for a resident Zen trainee at the Blue Heron Zen Center. Resident training offers an opportunity to deepen one’s Zen practice in a beautiful, comfortable group setting near North Seattle College. Prospective residents are expected to have a strong commitment to Zen. For more information, please see our Resident Guidelines. If you’d like to discuss becoming a resident at Blue Heron, please contact Abbott Paul Gulick or Zen Master Jeong Bong.

Chanting Requests

Once a month, we set aside time in our Sunday practice to express compassion for anyone who is suffering or recently deceased. Kwan Seum Bosal chanting is for anyone who is suffering. Ji Jang Bosal chanting is for the recently deceased. We invite you to register the names of loved ones for either chant. We will recite the names when we do special chanting.
