There’s something special about this time of year. The hot summer air has mellowed to a cool crispness, and we’re treated to the vibrant colors of autumn as nature sheds her leaves in an explosion of reds, oranges and yellows.
In the next few weeks their colors will fade and become muted. If we think of them only as dead leaves, we’re missing the big picture. Although their physical appearance will eventually become unrecognizable, nothing will be lost.
Just as we traditionally nourish ourselves with root vegetables and other foods preserved from the harvest, the earth absorbs nutrients from the leaves and sustains itself for next spring’s reawakening.
If we can perceive the continuity of life beyond physical appearances, we may recognize this year’s fallen leaves in next year’s buds.
Feel free to say, “Hi.”
Yours in the Dharma,
Jeong Bong
