New Superintendent Trisha Danah
The Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the appointment of Ms. Trisha Danah as the new Superintendent of Lexington School for the Deaf. Ms. Danah comes to Lexington from her position as Coordinator, Deaf and Hard of Hearing Programs and Director of Early Learning Program for Delaware Statewide Programs for the Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and DeafBlind.
In announcing the appointment, Board Co-Presidents Dr. Kim Kurz and Suzanne Chen noted Ms. Danah’s extensive experience in K-12 Deaf education and her commitment to educational excellence. Students and staff held a special welcome ceremony for Ms. Danah on July 6th.

Congratulations to the Class of 2026!
Valedictorian Nicole Lorena Melgar Mendoza and Salutatorian Heather A. Marin were recognized at Lexington's 162nd High School Commencement Ceremony on June 25th. Commencement speaker Alex Abendhuchan, media creator and host of The Daily Moth, encouraged students to reinvent themselves to achieve their dreams. Special guest Jessica Gonzales-Rojas, 34th District Assemblymember, stressed the importance of celebrating individuality. Graduate Luncheon & Awards
Prior to this year's ceremony, seniors were treated to a special graduation luncheon. Several scholarship awards were presented to seniors for their accomplishments.

Lexington Supports Flood Prep Program
Lexington was honored to be selected for a NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Flood Prep Town Hall. On July 14, elected officials and DEP staff rolled up their sleeves to pass out 35 pound flood protection kits to our Queens neighbors. Among those assisting were NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards; City Council members Tiffany Cabán, Shekar Krishnan, and Shanel Thomas-Henry; and NYS Assembly members Jessica González-Rojas, Larinda Hooks, and Steven Raga.

Middle School Graduation
There were lots of smiles at the June 24th Middle School graduation. Valedictorian Samantha Nozius and Salutatorian Benson Yu shared words of wisdom with fellow classmates and reminded them that academic success requires preparation and effort. Middle School Student Government President Yudesh Persaud detailed the past year's activities and High School Student Council Vice President Mamadou Balde welcomed the incoming high schoolers.

Middle School Robotics
Our Middle School Robotics and Drone teams traveled to Colorado on April 20th to 27th to compete in the NTID Regional STEM Center (NRSC) Robotics and Drone Tournament. Robotics Team 42904A (Jesus, Dianelly, Samantha) placed 14th out of 32 teams in the Middle School Robotics Tournament and advanced to the playoffs. The team finished 7th overall, tied for 2nd place in Autonomous (coding), and earned the Think Award. Drone Team 97549A (Markuss, Samantha) won the Middle School Skills Competition, which combined autonomous flight and piloting. They placed 3rd overall out of 34 teams - including high school teams - and ranked 2nd in Autonomous. They received the Airmanship Award for their teamwork, professionalism, and drone safety. See My Name in Lights
The theme for the June 4th student dance show was "See My Name in Lights." The show, choreographed and directed by dance teacher Lola Rios, included students from preschool, elementary, middle school, and special needs classes. The production included dances set to hits from Broadway shows including: Newsies, Matilda, The Lion King, Annie, Wicked, and more. Click below for a video clip of the show!

Special Needs Excellence Ceremony
Special Needs students were recognized at a ceremony on June 10th. Following a celebratory lunch, students received certificates in recognition of their accomplishments. Congratulations to Mervin, Jesus, Britney, Giovanni, Oscar, Bryan, Anthony, Jose Carlos, Artavian, Jhon, Ethan, Jasleen, Zaria, Aniqa, Fabian, and Kayla!

ASL Music Video Collaboration
For a second year, Interborough Repertory Theater (IRT Theater) coordinated a collaboration between Lexington’s Drama Club, Brooklyn Collaborative Studies School, and St. Mary’s School for the Deaf to create an ASL music video. Check out this year’s music video – “Revolting Children” – from Matilda: The Musical. Kudos to Jared Lopatin and members of the Lexington Drama Club (Fatoumata, Kerdell, Mamadou, Shania, Soraya, Tristan, Zahra) for a fantastic collaboration!

Fifth Grade Move Up
Congratulations to our fifth graders! At the June 18th Moving Up Ceremony, they shared favorite memories from elementary school, described their future career plans, and outlined their hopes and expectations for middle school. We are so proud of them!

Kindergarten Graduation
What could be cuter than a kindergarten graduation! The kindergarten class of 2026 accepted their achievement certificates with pride during the June 23rd ceremony. The festivities included a student video, a review of summer ASL words, and a group dance. Thanks to the teachers, instructional assistants, and staff who organized the event!

Honoring Dr. Oscar Cohen
The Lexington community came together on April 30th to honor Dr. Oscar Cohen, former CEO/Superintendent, for his many years of service to the school and the Lexington agencies. Following a reception in the library, the entire school convened in the gym for a recognition ceremony. Dr. Cohen, a longstanding Bluejays basketball supporter, tossed the ball for the opening tip-off of a student versus faculty/alumni basketball game. Following the game, the entire school lined up in the gym hallway to cheer Dr. Cohen as he walked to the main lobby for the unveiling of a plaque in his honor.
