Weekly Thoughts from the Chair:
The Insurrectionists who tried to overturn the election
Members of Congress were involved in attempting to overturn the election, including Representatives Greene, Jordan, Boebert, Scott Perry (R-PA), Louie Gohmert (R-TX), Andy Biggs (R-AZ), Mo Brooks (R-AL), Jody Hice (R-GA), Paul Gosar (R-AZ), and Debbie Lesko (R-AZ). The "Freedom Caucus," was right there, with all the usual suspects: first chair Jim Jordan, second chair Mark Meadows, third chair Andy Biggs. Organizer Mick Mulvaney would go to Trump’s White House. Ron DeSantis is now governor of Florida. These people intend to destroy our democracy.

In 2018, speechwriter for George W. Bush, David Frum, said: "If conservatives become convinced that they cannot win democratically, they will not abandon conservatism. They will reject democracy." And on that fateful day on January 6, Liz Cheney (R-WY) told Jordan "Get away from me. You f**ing did this."

Do you have any question now about the value of your vote? Go vote! Vote as if the future of your country is at stake – because it is! These anti American and amoral Republicans intend to take away your rights and freedoms. Go Vote!

Early voting starts tomorrow, May 2. You may vote at any of the early voting locations. Exactly what is it that you have to do that is more important? Go Vote!

HCDP Committee News

A few weeks ago, Tornye ("Tony") Konne submitted his resignation as the Treasurer of the Hall County Democratic Party. Tony stepped up to take on the Treasurer's role during the COVID 19 pandemic, as we, like everyone else, were making adjustments to be able to continue operations while protecting our members from the risks of the deadly virus. Tony worked hard to help the Committee keep functioning by carrying out the duties of Treasurer. He calmly navigated the challenges of a dynamic situation, not only because of the pandemic, but also because our country faced, for the first time, a refusal to carry out a peaceful transition of power. The seditious conspiracy to keep the autocrat Donald Trump in power by overturning the 2020 election was another blow to "business as usual." Through these tumultuous times, Tony's dedication to democracy and our party were evident. We can't express our appreciation enough for the hours he spent on our behalf. Thank you so much, Tony, for your help through the past two years.

On Thursday, April 21, the Committee of the HCDP elected Michael LaRose to be our next Treasurer. We are confident that Michael will take on this role with the same dedication as his predecessors, Tony Konne and --before him--Andy Colaninno. Please join us in congratulating Michael on his new role.

In two televised "debates," Perdue pushed the Big Lie to pander to his godfather Trump while Kemp touted accomplishments, taking credit for economic initiatives passed by Democrats in Congress and signed by Joe Biden. They both, however, invoked the name of Stacey Abrams multiple times (19 in one debate alone). As she put it on Twitter, Stacey is living in these guys' heads rent free. Get ready to work to elect Stacey our next governor!

In other election news, after 15 months of declining automatic voter registration in Georgia and a media expose, the Secretary of State's office fixed a "mistake," whereby the default for voter registration when applying for a driver's license was set to NO. Previously the default was YES. Perhaps we're being too cynical when we wonder if this "mistake" was part of the GOP plan to cut down on new voter registrations in Georgia, but the number of obstacles they have put in place since Biden's victory in Georgia in 2020 certainly give us reason to question their motives.

Finally, some more good news! Stacey Abrams had sued the state because of a law passed last year that allows incumbents to raise unlimited amounts of money during the months before the primary, while limiting the fundraising of challengers until they are officially their parties' nominee. A federal judge ruled this week that Brian Kemp can't have a special PAC to raise unlimited funds until he, too, becomes his parties' nominee..
