By Sara Samani Ward Chair

there is no leadership articles this week but we have an article from ward chair Sara Samani its about why Primaries matters

Hello fellow Democrats,

Primary elections are important because they determine who actually

appears on the ballot in the general election. This may not feel like a

big deal if this is the Democratic Party primary and a contest between

democrats, but it absolutely is a big deal.

Remember Kristen Sinema of Arizona? She ran as a Democrat and was

elected to represent Arizona, but consequentially, she voted against two

critical voting rights bills, the For the People Act and the John Lewis

Voting Rights Advancement Act. These bills aimed to expand access to

voting, limit the influence of money in our elections, limit gerrymandering

and racially based redistricting, and create an enforceable ethical code

of conduct for our Supreme Court Justices. She later renounced the

Democratic party and became an Independent. Why was she even

there? Corporate fundraising. Superpacs. In fact, she was handpicked

by Chuck Schumer himself for her proximity to AIPAC, Blackstone, and

other large moneymakers.

When the very reasonable Climate Horizons Act was killed in the NM

state legislature this year, it was killed decisively by seven Democrats in

the senate who joined the minority Republican party. We need to not

give in to short cut thinking and assume that just because someone is a

Democrat, they care about what we think they should care about.

When we get more involved in the primary process by voting, learning,

and educating others, we build a stronger Democratic party with stronger

and better representatives. They are stronger and fight harder for our

values.

Consider the fact that because our state tends to vote Blue, it is cheaper

for an oligarch to corrupt a Democrat than get a Republican elected in

this state.

That is not to say that just because someone within our party disagrees

with us, we should assume bad intentions. We are a big tent party who

fights for all Americans. However, if we want candidates who fight for our

values as citizens, we need to be involved in the primary process.

What do you think?

Dems Deliver: Protecting Voting Rights and Keeping Elections Civilian-Led

Democrats in New Mexico delivered a strong, values-driven win with New Mexico Senate Bill 264.

This law doesn’t just expand access. It reinforces a core democratic principle: elections should be run by civilian authorities, not influenced or intimidated by military presence.

SB 264:

  • Strengthens voter access and modernizes registration systems
  • Protects eligible voters from wrongful removal
  • Reinforces that election administration remains in civilian hands, free from coercion or intimidation
  • Upholds the long-standing norm that the military does not play a role in domestic election operations

New Mexico made it clear: our elections belong to the people, administered transparently and without interference.

This is what responsible governance looks like. Expanding access while protecting the integrity and independence of the process.

GOP Lie: The SAVE Act Is Needed to Stop Widespread Non-Citizen Voting

Republicans argue that the SAVE Act is necessary because non-citizens are voting in large numbers.

Reality:

There is no evidence of widespread non-citizen voting. Investigations across the country, including in Republican-led states, consistently find that it is exceedingly rare.

What the SAVE Act actually does is require strict documentary proof of citizenship, like passports or birth certificates, for voter registration. That creates barriers for eligible voters without solving a real problem.

This is a solution in search of a problem, and one that risks blocking lawful voters from participating.

Every week, we will dive into our party platform, our resolutions, or big topics and take a stand.

Week of April 28th: Ranked Choice Voting

Rank Choice Voting Explained

Submitted by: Loralyn Conover, Maggie Horan, Ward Chairs

Ranked-choice voting (RCV) is an electoral system where voters rank candidates by preference (1st, 2nd, 3rd) rather than picking just one. Instead of just voting for one candidate, you have the option of ranking candidates in order of your preference. First, second, third, and so on. If a candidate gets a majority of 1st-place votes, they win. If not, the last-place candidate is eliminated, and their votes are redistributed based on 2nd-place choices until someone wins. This allows more candidates to run, and it encourages more people to take part in the Democratic process.

Example:

Instead of just voting for one candidate, you have the option of ranking candidates in order of your preference. First, second, third, and so on.  When the ballots are counted, if no one gets an outright majority, then the candidate with the lowest amount of votes is eliminated, and their votes are distributed to the next preferred or second choice candidate. This process continues until a candidate receives 50 percent of the vote and is declared the winner.

The benefits of this are that candidates are less likely to engage in mudslinging or trashing out their opposition because they are not trying to be just the voters’ first choice; they are also trying to be the voters’ second choice, who are backing their opponents. Ranked-choice voting encourages candidates to be nicer and more inclusive, appealing to a broader range of voters.

RCV allows voters to vote FOR candidates they like the most instead of voting AGAINST a candidate that they like the least! It also makes voters feel like they are not just voting for the lesser of two evils. If your first choice candidate doesn’t make it to the final round, then your second or third choice candidate could end up winning in the final tally.

Below is a fun video showing how RCV works:
