Expanded Early Voting is Underway!

Grab Your Neighbors, Go Vote, and Make Your Voice Heard.

Expanded early voting has begun and Election Day is Tuesday, June 2.

It is time to help voters make a plan, understand what is on their ballot, and participate in the primary.

As a primary voter, you are a part of super engaged voters who will decide who our Democratic nominees are. It is a huge deal and we hope you research all the candidates above.

Over the next few weeks, DPBC will be focused on voter contact, primary education, and making sure Democrats across Bernalillo County know how and when to vote. Primary ballots are full of important choices this year, and yes, some of them may even require voters to use their handwriting skills.

Ward and precinct chairs have an important role to play in this work. Whether it is texting neighbors, making calls, sharing voting information, or helping someone find their polling location, every action helps build turnout.

Primary elections can be passionate, and that is okay. Democrats care deeply about our communities and our future. But we also have a responsibility to lead with respect, stay focused on the issues, and remember that after June 2, we will need to come together to win in November.

If you are voting or want to get good information to neighbors, please use our election guide:
DPBC PRIMARY GUIDE

We only reap what we sow. If we want strong Democratic turnout, strong candidates, and a strong party, we have to organize now.

Expanded early voting is underway. Election Day is June 2.

Let’s get to work.

Chair Jacob Trujillo

Attorney General Raul Torrez vs. META

Raul Torrez has taken one of the more aggressive state-level enforcement approaches in the country against major tech platforms, including Meta Platforms, focusing on child safety, deceptive design practices, and platform accountability.

A Jury ordered Meta to pay $375 million in civil penalties for willfully violating state consumer protection laws

Why it matters politically

  • It signals state-level Democratic attorneys general actively shaping tech regulation where Congress has stalled
  • It builds a multi-state accountability framework targeting child safety and algorithmic harms
  • It positions NM as part of a coordinated legal front challenging Big Tech practices rather than relying on federal action alone

Claim: “End the Russia-Ukraine war within 24 hours”

This line has repeatedly been used as a campaign promise, including by Donald Trump and aligned surrogates, implying that the war could be quickly resolved through immediate negotiation leverage.

Where it actually stands

  • No rapid negotiated settlement has materialized
  • Fighting and territorial disputes remain active
  • Peace frameworks discussed internationally remain conditional and unresolved

In short, the promise functions as a rhetorical guarantee that has not matched real-world diplomatic or battlefield complexity. Donald Trump lied.

Write In Jacob Trujillo for Public Education Commission D-3

By Jacob Trujillo

Hi Bern Co Dems,

New Mexico’s public schools are facing serious challenges at a time when education is under pressure nationwide. From efforts to undermine public education to attacks on educators and local decision-making, this moment requires strong leadership and accountability. That is why I am running as a declared write-in candidate for Public Education Commission District 3.

The Public Education Commission has a major responsibility in overseeing charter schools and protecting educational standards for students and families across our state. This work is personal to me. I attended a charter school here in District 3 from sixth grade through graduation. I saw firsthand the opportunities charter schools can provide, but I also understand the importance of transparency, accountability, and ensuring every student is served fairly.

For the past five years, I have worked as a congressional staffer in Albuquerque, helping constituents solve problems, connect with resources, and navigate government services. I currently serve as Chair of the Democratic Party of Bernalillo County, where I have focused on strengthening grassroots organizing, community engagement, and local Democratic infrastructure.

This election carries additional stakes because it is a write-in race. To qualify for the general election ballot, our campaign must receive at least 350 write-in votes in the Democratic primary. If we succeed, Democrats will have the opportunity to flip the Public Education Commission majority. If we fall short, there will be no Democratic nominee in November.

Because of that, voter outreach is critical. We are working to educate voters through direct contact, mail, digital outreach, and community engagement so they know this race is on their ballot and understand exactly how to write in my name.

I would be honored to earn your support. Please write in Jacob Trujillo for Public Education Commission District 3 and consider making a contribution to help us reach voters across the district:

Together, we can stand up for strong, accountable public education in New Mexico.

Thanks, Jacob

Why HD27 Needs to Reelect Rep. Marian Matthews
By Diane Denish

I read with interest the op-ed by Julie Rochman suggesting that HD27

should elect a new Democratic Representative. Rochman does not live in

HD27 – she lives in HD31 where a Republican holds the seat. But beyond

my curiosity about why she isn’t working to elect a Democrat in her own

district rather than trying to defeat a solid Democratic incumbent like

Matthews, her op-ed deserves a response that sets the record straight.

For the record, I don’t live in HD27 either. However, unlike Rochman I

actually know Rep. Matthews and her long time record of supporting

Democrats and good policy. Unfortunately, Rochman has adopted the all

too popular strategy of lying about someone’s record or at best twisting

information to help her candidate Abby Foster.

So here are the facts:

1. Rochman’s claims that Matthews missed votes. Rochman and Foster

don’t want you to know the reason. When, in fact, Matthews has

missed votes it is because Speaker Javier Martinez trusted her to

negotiate the medical licensure compacts representing the House

Caucus and present the bill before committees. He excused her from

the floor sessions. Like the candidate she is endorsing, Rochman

doesn’t know how the Legislature works – legislators get excused

from floor sessions to do some of the most important work and

present bills in committee, as well as for illness, emergencies, travel

hiccups, and other reasons. If there is a critical vote on the floor, the

Majority Whip will make sure representatives get back to the floor to

cast a vote.

And the footnote? Because of her hard work and success in passing the

medical licensure compact, her work on affordable housing and safety

issues like human trafficking, and his confidence in her, Speaker

Martinez has endorsed Rep. Matthews for re-election. .

2. Matthews did indeed vote against a poorly written and poorly

thought-out Paid Family medical leave bill – along with other

Democrats and Republicans. While paid family medical leave is an

aspiration – the bill that failed would have hurt people with

disabilities and put them at risk for losing services. It would hurt

mom and pop businesses.

But let’s be frank. Rochman’s assertion that Matthews or any legislator did

something single handedly reflects inexperience and understanding of the

legislature. Matthews, along with other Democrats, expressed their

concerns about the impact of the original PFM on individuals with

disabilities and small business. When those concerns were not addressed,

they voted in the interest of their constituents.

3. “She regularly votes with Republicans.” So does every other

member of the Democratic Caucus. 80% of all bills pass with bi-

partisan votes. And the medical licensure bill (also known as the

doctor compacts) which provide more access to doctors for New

Mexicans and which Matthews helped to negotiate? – passed the

House unanimously.

HB99 Medical Malpractice reform also passed by a whopping 66-3 margin.

The passage of this bill by both chambers will help recruit and retain

doctors for NM. Democrats and Republicans working together.

In the most recent campaign financial disclosures we learn that Foster has

been bankrolled by the Trial Lawyers explaining why she has flipped her

interests from supporting doctors to supporting medical malpractice

lawyers who have fought against any changes to New Mexico’s egregious

malpractice laws.

Over the years, Marian Matthews has worked hard for Democrats – at

every level. As a representative, she has worked tirelessly to stay in touch

with her constituents. In addition to working to address concerns about

access to doctors and medical care, she meets regularly with constituents

in The Meadows to talk about rising rent prices and the danger of private

equity investment. She works with other legislators to fund facilities in

Bernalillo County that benefit HD 27. Examples of these are: Domingo

Baca Community Center and funding, APD technology that has been

proven to identify and deter crimes in all of Albuquerque including HD27,

and fire station funding for adequate protection in the area. She votes

every time for reproductive freedoms as indicated by her continued

endorsement by Planned Parenthood of The Rocky Mountains. Rep.

Matthews has a record of strong engagement on the issues from small

business to healthcare. She listens and makes decisions in the best interests

of her constituents. She flipped the seat for Democrats after it was held

for years by a Republican.

Perhaps it is Rochman who should “move along” or maybe focus on her own district. While Rochman’s candidate has spent her time and money

criticizing Matthews, spouting old, tired platitudes, she has given HD27

no reason to vote for her. Matthews, on the other hand, continues to spend

her time and energy engaging with constituents to solve problems that

impact everyday lives.

.

HD27 deserves someone who understands the district, who knows and

engages with her constituents year-round, who isn’t afraid of making

tough decisions, and whose first priorities are the people she represents in

HD27. That’s Marian Matthews.

She not only deserves but has earned re-election.

A Note From Rep. Joy Garratt: The Blue Review and HD27

I would like to suggest that the Blue Review not be used by Democrats to campaign against Democratic candidates that they oppose. Those Democrats disparaging other Democrats should use their personal social media accounts if they take such stands, not the media tools sponsored by official Democratic publications.

There are at least five BernCo House and County primaries where Democrats are opposing other Democrats. I believe it's vital that we honor and respect every individual who chooses to run for office or is in office--we may disagree on certain issues but not all. It takes an incredible work ethic to serve, let me tell you.

I want to make a few informational notes for those who may not be familiar with legislative functioning as it came up in a twice- published article in the “Blue Review” spreading misinformation about Rep. Marian Matthews.

1. All of us legislators co-sponsor legislation--major and minor--with Republicans as well as Democrats. 80% of our work is nonpartisan or bi-partisan. 20% or less is partisan. Not all Democrats are lock-step on every piece of Democratic bills. HB 99, reforming medical malpractice, had strong Democrats opposing it while most of us along with Republican colleagues totally supported it and got it to the Governor's desk. I carry key education legislation. One of my regular co-sponsors is educator Rep. Brian Baca. As he says, "On House Education Committee, we are not Republicans or Democrats--we are educators who care about our kids and educators." There are some bills where we totally disagree--mostly, we agree because we want our students to advance.

2. Voting in committees and on the House or Senate Floor: Getting legislation through both houses is challenging. We passed ten medical inter-state compacts on the House floor. Only two passed the Senate. Rep. Marian Matthews, a lead sponsor on the compacts, spent hours and hours presenting the bills in Senate committees and trying to get them through the committees and onto a vote on the Senate floor. As a result she missed some House votes doing her diligent efforts to pass key legislation that all New Mexicans were pushing for.

3. Capital outlay: there are numerous capital outlay projects outside of our respective district boundaries that benefit all our constituents and public servants. The proposed BCSO Training Center located in the South Valley serves us all. Museums like Explora, the National Hispanic Cultural Center, the Natural History Museum, the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, and Balloon Museum serve the entire state and city regardless of location. Thus, legislators all make contributions to a range of projects that are located out side their specific geographic areas
.

Again, let us use Democratic Party tools like the Blue Review to publicize candidates, opportunities to help both candidates and Party activities and share ideas. Let us not use these tools to disparage Democratic candidates.
