No Kings Day Is Back—And It Matters

Hey Bern Co Dems,

Its Jacob!

On March 28, New Mexicans will once again come together for No Kings Day, a powerful demonstration that our democracy belongs to the people—not to any one individual. At a time when democratic norms are being tested and accountability feels uncertain, showing up matters more than ever.

No Kings Day is about drawing a clear line. We reject authoritarian leadership. We believe in checks and balances. And we stand for a government that answers to its people, not one that demands loyalty or operates without consequence. These are not abstract ideas. They shape the future of our communities, our rights, and our ability to be heard.

Moments like this only work when people participate. When we show up, we send a message that New Mexicans are paying attention, that we care about the direction of our country, and that we’re willing to stand up for it. Whether you’ve attended every rally or this is your first time, your presence matters.

For full event details, timing, and guidance, visit:

https://indivisible-albuquerque.com/no-kings-iii-1

We’re also hosting a Sign-Making Party on Thursday, March 26 from 5:30–7:30 PM at the DPNM Office (4013 Silver Ave). We’ll have food, guests, and everything you need to make signs—just bring your ideas and your energy.

If you’re able to help make the event a success, Flora Lucero is building out a volunteer team. We’re looking for Peacekeepers, Parking Attendants, and Chant Group participants. If you are free on March 28, please reach out to her at ftlucero2010@gmail.com.

Show up. Bring a friend. Let’s make it count.

New Mexico Democrats delivered one of the most transformative investments in working families by passing Senate Bill 241, establishing and funding the nation’s first universal child care system. The law allows the state to invest up to $700 million from the Early Childhood Trust Fund and expands child care access to families regardless of income.

That means real relief for New Mexicans—saving families thousands of dollars a year, helping parents stay in the workforce, and ensuring every child has access to safe, high-quality care. This is what it looks like when Democrats deliver: lowering costs, strengthening families, and investing in the next generation.

Thank you!

War in Iran:

What Trump Claims:

“Everything is going great. We’ve crippled Iran’s capabilities, restored strength, and we’re in control. This will wrap up quickly.”

Reality:

The situation remains volatile with no clear timeline. Despite early suggestions of a quick resolution, the conflict continues to escalate in scope, with additional U.S. forces deployed to the region and ongoing threats of broader strikes. Messaging from the administration has shifted week to week, reflecting an uncertain and evolving situation rather than a defined endgame.

Actual Impact:

This isn’t a success story—it’s a war, and people are paying the price for it right now. American service members have been put in harm’s way, and lives have already been lost. Civilians across the region are caught in the middle, including children—like the young girls killed when a school in Iran was struck.

This is what escalation looks like: not clean victories, but loss, grief, and consequences that spiral far beyond what was promised. And while families—here and abroad—deal with the real cost of those decisions, the people making them don’t feel the same risk, the same fear, or the same loss. Instead, we’re told everything is “going great,” even as the reality tells a very different story.

Every week, we will dive into our party platform, our resolutions, or big topics and take a stand.

Advancing Sensible Firearm Safety in New Mexico

Conversations with Your Representatives

New Mexico has passed several bills advancing firearm safety: background checks, Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPO)/red flag laws, and a seven-day waiting period. These are real steps forward.

At the same time, a policy that is a basic Democratic platform tenet—semiautomatic firearm and high-capacity magazine restrictions—has not yet been enacted, despite an eight-year Democratic trifecta. This article provides context for conversations with legislators to explain why this policy matters, identify barriers, and build the support needed to get it done.

Gun violence was the leading cause of death for children in the U.S. in 2024, according to the CDC. There have been nearly 3,000 school shooting incidents between 1966 and 2025.

Nationally, Democrats have been clear about the urgency of this issue. As DNC Chair Ken Martin stated on National Gun Violence Awareness Day in 2025: “We mourn the lives that have been taken through gun violence… we must also honor their memories by taking action to pass comprehensive gun reform.”

In New Mexico, there has been real effort to advance this policy. Senate Bill 17 passed the Senate after moving through committees and the floor. In the House, it advanced through its first committee, but ultimately stalled in House Judiciary. These outcomes point to a reality we have to address directly: support exists, but not yet at the level needed to secure final passage.

Understanding where that gap exists—and how to close it—is the work in front of us.

Rather than assigning blame, this is a moment to engage. Legislators are balancing different constituencies, regional concerns, and legal considerations. If we want this policy to pass, we have to help build the conditions that make a “yes” vote possible next session. This bill passed the Senate with 3 Democrats voting in the negative. It passes House Commerce with one Democrat voting in the negative. SB17 stalled out in House Judiciary with no action taken by Sine Die.

Contact your Democratic representative. Affirm your support for this policy and ask what they need to get it across the finish line next year.

Some questions to guide that conversation:

  • How did you vote, or how would you have voted on final passage, and why?
  • Were there enough votes for a floor vote? If not, what was missing?
  • What kind of public support—calls, emails, community advocacy—would have made a difference?
  • Are there regional or community concerns that need to be addressed to build broader support?
  • What changes to the bill’s language or approach would improve its chances of passing?
  • Why did members who previously supported similar legislation approach this bill differently?

We need to understand these decisions clearly. New Mexico may not always have a Democratic trifecta, and moments like this matter. Progress depends not just on policy alignment, but on building the support needed to act.

We have made progress. Now we need to finish the job.

The Young Democrats of America Indigenous Caucus is raising support to bring Native youth leaders to the Young Democrats of America & DNC Spring Meeting in New Orleans, April 9–11. This national gathering is where important conversations about policy, leadership, and the future of our party take place—and Indigenous voices must be part of that conversation.

For generations, Native communities have fought to protect our sovereignty, our lands, our cultures, and our rights. Today, a new generation of Indigenous leaders is stepping forward to continue that work. By helping us travel to New Orleans, you are investing in the leadership development of young Native advocates who will represent Tribal nations, raise the issues that matter to Indigenous communities, and ensure our voices are heard on a national stage.

Your support helps cover lodging and meals making it possible for young Indigenous leaders from across the country to attend and participate fully. Every contribution—large or small—helps strengthen Indigenous representation and empowers the next generation of leaders.

When Native youth are present in the rooms where decisions are made, our communities are stronger and our future becomes brighter.

Together, let’s lift Indigenous voices, honor our ancestors, and open the door for the leaders of tomorrow. The journey to New Orleans is more than a trip—it’s a step toward a future where Native leadership is seen, heard, and respected everywhere.
