Across the country, a warning light is flashing: young Americans are drifting away from the Democratic Party. More and more Gen Z and Millennials are choosing to call themselves “independent,” not because they don’t care—but because they feel unheard, unseen, and fed up with politics as usual.
That trend should concern every Democrat in New Mexico, especially here in Bernalillo County.
Let’s be honest. Young people are not apathetic. They are frustrated. They are tired of speeches that don’t lead to action, leaders who talk past them, and systems that feel closed off to new voices. They are facing rising rents, stagnant wages, student debt, climate anxiety, and mental health struggles—while politics often feels stuck in yesterday’s arguments.
Walking away from parties may feel like independence. But history tells us something important: real change doesn’t come from disengagement—it comes from participation.
Democrats cannot afford to ignore this moment. And young people cannot afford to sit it out.
Here’s the hard truth: if young people don’t help shape the Democratic Party, someone else will. Power never stays vacant. When we step back, decisions are still made—just without our values at the table.
The Democratic Party has always been strongest when it opens its doors wider. Labor movements, civil rights, women’s rights, disability rights—none of these advances came from standing on the sidelines. They came from people who showed up, organized locally, and demanded better.
That work starts right here, in our wards, precincts, and county meetings. It starts with inviting young people not just to attend—but to lead. It means listening more than lecturing. It means talking about real-life struggles, not just campaign slogans. And it means proving, through action, that participation actually matters.
Young people want authenticity. They want opportunity. They want a party that reflects their lives and trusts them with responsibility.
This moment is not a crisis—it’s an opportunity.
If Democrats in New Mexico rise to meet this generation with respect, urgency, and courage, we won’t lose young voters—we’ll ignite them. But if we don’t, we risk letting an entire generation drift away from democracy itself.
The future isn’t waiting patiently.
Neither should we.
Show up. Speak up. Build something better—together.
