Protect Chaco Canyon: Why Bernalillo County Democrats Must Speak Up

Hi Bern Co Dems,

I’m asking our members to take a few minutes this week and submit a public comment defending Chaco Canyon.

Chaco Culture National Historical Park is one of the most important cultural landscapes in North America — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a living ancestral homeland for Pueblo peoples.

In 2023, then-Interior Secretary Deb Haaland established a 10-mile protective buffer that withdrew more than 336,000 acres of surrounding public land from new oil and gas leasing for 20 years. That decision was the result of years of Tribal leadership and public advocacy, and it remains one of the clearest examples of what strong, values-driven leadership looks like for New Mexico.

That buffer is now under direct attack. The Trump Bureau of Land Management has released a draft environmental assessment proposing three options: keep the full 10-mile protection, shrink it to five miles, or eliminate it entirely. The public has only until July 29 to comment.

This matters. Chaco is part of our shared New Mexico story. When Tribal Nations and the All Pueblo Council of Governors say these protections must stay in place, we should stand with them. Defending the buffer also means defending the kind of leadership Secretary Haaland showed — and the kind we need as she runs to be our next Governor.

Here’s how to act:

  1. Go to the official BLM project page: https://eplanning.blm.gov/Project-Home/?id=D949F582-402D-F111-8341-001DD804183B
  2. Click Participate Now.
  3. Submit a comment supporting the full 10-mile buffer created under Secretary Haaland and opposing any reduction or revocation.

You can also sign a New Mexico Wild petition, but the official BLM comment is the one that goes into the formal record.

Comments close July 29. This is a clear chance for Bernalillo County Democrats to show up for Tribal sovereignty, cultural protection, and the New Mexico we want to hand to the next generation.

Do it today.

Dem Win: Protecting voters and elections

While Republicans recycle baseless conspiracy theories, New Mexico Democrats continue to defend secure, accessible elections. Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver just won a major court victory dismissing a Trump DOJ lawsuit seeking unredacted voter rolls, protecting New Mexicans’ private data from federal overreach. The state passed strong new laws barring armed federal agents at polls, ensuring emergency continuity, and maintaining top-ranked election administration with paper ballots, risk-limiting audits, and robust safeguards proving that real election integrity means trusting voters, not fearmongering.

GOP Lie: Election fraud and the Big Lie

In his July 16 primetime speech, Trump once again peddled the tired myth of massive election fraud, claiming China stole 220 million voter files, noncitizens are flooding the rolls, and our systems are catastrophically vulnerable to hacking and cheating — all to justify pushing the SAVE Act and proof-of-citizenship requirements. He offered no new evidence that any votes were changed or outcomes altered, just recycled, debunked talking points designed to erode trust ahead of the midterms.
