Where We Are: Fundraising, Advocacy, and Planning for 2026

By Jacob Trujillo

Last night marked the close of our six-month fundraising deadline, and as this goes out Tuesday morning, we are waiting on the final numbers. That benchmark matters. It tells us where we stand, how we stack up against Republicans, and whether we are truly prepared for the fights ahead this year. We know what is at stake, and we take seriously the responsibility to be ready.

At the same time, our Spring Gala is in full swing and building real momentum. We are seeing strong support from across Bernalillo County, and it is clear that people are ready to invest in the work ahead. Next week, Blue Review readers will get an early look at our guest speakers, and I think you will be proud of what we are putting together.

As Chair, I am also focused on two advocacy efforts right now. First, as a Hispanic man, I believe we must take a hard look at who we choose to honor with public resources. That is why I am calling for the removal and renaming of facilities and roads currently bearing the name of Cesar Chavez. Accountability does not stop with history. It continues with us.

It all begins with us, and sometimes it begins as simply, but profoundly, as with a name.

The Renaming of Avenida Cesar Chavez to Avenida Dolores Huerta is a way to recognize a leader whose words, courage, and lifetime of service in forging a movement and empowering our communities.

Let's ensure the full history is told, give credit where it's due, and sign the petition so we can be a part of making it a reality.

Second, I spent Monday at Albuquerque City Council advocating for Ranked Choice Voting. While it may not have passed that night, the conversation is moving forward. We deserve a more democratic system, and I am confident our community is ready for it.

Finally, our Q2 guiding document was sent to all ward and precinct chairs on Monday. This plan outlines our priorities for the next three months, including how we build unity, expand outreach, and drive turnout during a critical primary season. If you did not receive it, want to review it, or are interested in joining our 5:30 PM team call tonight, please reach out to Chair@BernalilloDems.org.

Dems Deliver: A Budget That Invests in New Mexico

In 2026, New Mexico Democrats passed a historic state budget that makes real investments in the future of our communities.

This wasn’t just a spending plan—it was a values statement. Democrats prioritized: Raises for teachers and state employees to retain and recruit a strong workforce, Major investments in public safety, including support for law enforcement and community-based programs, Funding for roads, infrastructure, and water projects across the state, Expanded housing and homelessness initiatives to address one of our most urgent challenges and Continued funding for education at every level, from K-12 to higher education

This is what effective governance looks like: putting resources where they matter most and delivering for every corner of New Mexico.

Democrats did the work, passed the budget, and are delivering results statewide.

Here’s the reality: many Republicans in New Mexico voted against the very budget now delivering resources to their communities.

And yet, we’re already seeing members of the NMGOP trying to take credit for funding they opposed.

You can’t have it both ways: You can’t vote no on investments in your district. Then turn around and claim you “brought home” those dollars

Democrats passed the budget that is funding roads, schools, and public safety across New Mexico.

Republicans voted against it—and are now trying to rewrite the record.

Week of April 7th: Economy and Jobs

Read the specifics here: https://www.nmdemocrats.org/issues/business-economy-and-revenue-sources?source=f0721b46-6929-4f00-8090-b5eb9b203f36

Democrats in New Mexico believe our economy should create real opportunity and real security for every person willing to work. That means jobs that pay enough to support a family, access to affordable health care, and the ability to build stability over time, not just get by day to day. We believe economic policy should be measured by whether it improves people’s lives in tangible ways.

We support strategic investments that grow our economy and strengthen our communities. That includes modernizing infrastructure, supporting small and local businesses, and ensuring fair competition so no one is pushed out by corporate consolidation or unfair practices. We also believe in removing barriers to work by expanding access to transportation, child care, and job training so more New Mexicans can fully participate in our economy.

We are committed to responsible revenue systems where everyone pays their fair share, allowing us to invest in education, health care, and long-term economic growth. And we believe in building a sustainable future by expanding clean energy and diversifying our economy.

At the end of the day, we believe our economy should reward work, expand opportunity, and leave no community behind.

Democrats on a Roll

By Bob Carroll

I got a kick out of the southeast NM Republican legislators who are calling for a vote to secede from New Mexico and join Texas. If you ever watch those guys during the legislative session, it quickly becomes apparent that (1) they’re not serious people; and (2) they don’t have much to do. The only time they get diverted from their usual hijinks is when a gun- related bill is debated, which causes a stampede among them, jumping and screaming bloody murder. When that debate is over, they go back to loafing.

In the meantime, the Democrats are changing New Mexico in remarkable ways that will make life in this state so much better for its people. First, there’s universal childcare. We are the first state in the country to pass this legislation (SB 241). It’s wonderful in so many ways but let me give you an example from a young family I know. They have a toddler and they’ve been paying $1,000 a month for childcare.

Instantly upon the implementation of SB 241, that expense went away. They plan on using the $12,000 annual savings for a down payment on a house. That’s a dramatic change in their lives.

Then there is free tuition at our community colleges and state universities. Democrats established free tuition so that kids out of high school can now seek post-secondary schooling without being saddled with enormous debt. That’s a big deal.

Then there’s healthcare. The New York Times had a recent article (March 20, 2026, by Reed Abelson) about how New Mexico “had fully replaced the expired federal subsidies with state money, the only state to do so.” Instead of an estimated 27,000 people in the state having to drop their health insurance, an additional 10,000 people are now covered. Never forget; the Republicans cut federal subsidies for healthcare to fund tax cuts which primarily benefited the rich.

Finally, Democrats have wisely put aside money during the current oil and gas boom to such an extent that the state’s sovereign wealth fund is now valued at an estimated $70 billion dollars.

We didn’t fritter away our good fortune. This means that when oil and

gas prices go down, as they inevitably will, the state won’t face drastic cuts in education, healthcare, and other essential services.

These incredible accomplishments only occurred because Democrats controlled the executive and legislative branches of government.
