Update on Minnesota Real ID Compliance


Concerns have been raised in local news reports about the October 10, 2017, expiration date of Minnesota's current extension for the federal REAL ID Act , which sets standards for state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards acceptable by federal agencies for official purposes, including commercial air travel. Minnesota recently passed a law allowing it to comply with Real ID, and indicates that it will make the necessary changes to state driver's licenses by October 2018.
 
While this situation may seem alarming, it is important to note that 25 states currently have limited-term extensions, all of which have an expiration date of October 10, 2017. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has indicated that they will review all of the current extensions and that further extensions will continue to be granted on an ongoing basis as is appropriate.
 
Based on current understanding of the political landscape and the extension process, it is believed there is no cause for concern, and that Minnesota will be able to renew its extension to allow it time to come into compliance with the federally-mandated requirements. To give a sense of the broad support for keeping travel disruptions to a minimum, the entire Minnesota Congressional delegation sent a bi-partisan letter to DHS voicing their support for granting Minnesota a further extension.

Delta to launch Nonstop Year-Round Service from Indianapolis to Paris 

Delta, in cooperation with joint venture partner Air France KLM, will bring nonstop trans-Atlantic service from Indianapolis to its European hub at Paris-Charles de Gaulle beginning May 24, 2018.

"Indiana and the Indianapolis metropolitan area has long been an important part of our route network and we are honored that Delta will be the first U.S. carrier to take Indiana nonstop to Europe," said Bob Cortelyou, Delta's Senior Vice President - Network Planning.
 
United Polaris Lounge expansion at Chicago O'Hare

United announced that they are building additional space in the Chicago O'Hare United Polaris Lounge, providing significantly more room for working, dining and enjoying the lounge's many luxurious amenities. 

They are also creating a dedicated pre-flight dining space for customers looking to enjoy a gourmet full-service culinary experience from the onsite chef. As United looks to the future, they are exploring designs for a more spacious United Club on the C Concourse with sweeping views of the tarmac. 

The C16 United Club location, currently under construction, is expected to open in the second half of December.

Ritz in Atlanta, Marriott in Chicago, Hilton in NYC + Los Angeles, Austin
 
In recent hotel news, a classic Atlanta property gets rebranded; Marriott cuts the ribbon on a big convention hotel in Chicago, and Viceroy Hotels adds a property there; a trendy independent property makes its debut in LA's West Hollywood district; Hilton adds a major location in Manhattan, near the United Nations; and Marriott/Starwood adds a dual-branded hotel in Austin.

Atlanta's Ritz-Carlton Buckhead, across the street from Lenox Square in Atlanta, has been a fixture of the city's upscale Buckhead district for 30 years. It was even the brand flagship when the company had its HQ in Atlanta. But it will be rebranded within a matter of weeks. The hotel's owner, Host Hotels & Resorts, has reached an agreement with Ritz-Carlton parent Marriott to take the property out of the Ritz-Carlton group and convert it into a property "under independent operation" called The Whitley. But it will still be part of the huge multi-brand Marriott family.
