Blue Star Museums Message about Summer 2020

Dear museum partner,

Thank you for registering as a Blue Star Museum for the summer of 2020. Blue Star Museums is among the most beloved programs for military families, and we are very grateful for your commitment to it. Of course, this is a very unusual year. Health and safety concerns are paramount, and many arts and culture institutions face existential challenges. Based on the feedback from the survey that was sent to you a few weeks ago and our work both with the museum field and military families, the National Endowment for the Arts and Blue Star Families have decided to cancel the Blue Star Museums program for 2020 comprising free admission for currently serving military and their families.

We acknowledge the hardships faced by both military families and museums and recognize that museums across the nation are operating in a different capacity than ever before due to COVID-19. This decision was made with an abundance of caution for museums and military families and out of respect and equitable support for the museum field.

We are inspired by the swiftness that so many museums have moved to virtual opportunities. The arts provide connection as Americans face times of isolation and will have a significant role to play in the well-being of America as we recover.

We look forward to next summer’s Blue Star Museums program coming back bigger and better than ever and wish good health and safety for all our museum partners and your families.
