Blue Wisp Jam Session Night

If you are a jazz musician (instrumentalist or singer), come and play with the pros at the Blue Wisp Jam Session Night. Cincinnati great - saxophonist/flutist  Sandy Suskind - is your host and emcee. This thrice monthly session is in its 3rd year and is a golden opportunity for all up and coming, as well as, veteran players, to get and keep their chops together. Ron Enyard - drums, Randy Villars - piano,  David Lloyd - bass. Great entertainment and music for all. Cover charge is $5. Support Jazz in Cincinnati!

The Northern Lights Jazztet has played locally in Cincinnati jazz venues for a little over a year and consists of Sean Fitzpatric on trumpet/flugelhorn, Phil Burkhead on piano, John Lattier on bass, and Ben Bratton on drums. The Young Jazz Messengers will open the night at 8pm and The Northern Lights will follow roughly around 9:30pm, with a final jam at the end of the night with both groups. Cover charge is only $5.

Blue Wisp Big Band
It's  Baron John Von Ohlen and the Award Winning 16-piece Blue Wisp Big Band, (check out this YouTube  video clip) holding down Wednesday nights at the Wisp for over 30 years. JVO drummed for the likes of Stan Kenton and Woody Herman. He is an internationally known, highly regarded big band drummer and this seasoned and seriously swinging jazz big band can be sublime. Come hear for yourself and enjoy the sounds!  $12 cover.

Eric Siereveld     
Eric Siereveld returns to the Blue Wisp with the Cincinnati based group Sound Infusion. The group is composed of Eric on trumpet and flugelhorn, Mark McCafferty on vibes, Bob Ross on guitar, John Toedtman on bass, and Leon Robinson on drums. This will be Sound Infusion's Blue Wisp debut and Eric's farewell performance before relocating to New York City. The group be presenting it's interpretation of standards as well as their originals and paying homage to the groups of Milt Jackson, Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Hutcherson, Donald Byrd, etc. Please join us for a night of great jazz, dinner, drinks and send our Cincinnati native trumpet player off to NYC! Cover is $5.

Columbus-based Saxophonist Returns
Pete Mills Quartet 
Pete Mills
A native of Toronto Canada, critics have called saxophonist Pete Mills' playing "virtuosic" and "gorgeous" and "versatile tenor-kick-butt" (David Franklin, JazzTimes) and the Columbus Dispatch writes of Mills' compositions as being "impressive with solos that are ear opening...with a tone that is big and rich". Based in Columbus OH, he performs throughout the US and Canada. Recent engagements have included the Blue Wisp Cincinnati, OH; the Erie (PA) Jazz Society; the Cleveland Bop Stop; the Rex in Toronto; Wright State University and Kenyon College. Pete's performances at jazz festivals include those at the Columbus Jazz Festival the Newark (Ohio) Jazz and Ribfest and at the Toronto Downtown Jazz Festival. Pete is a member of the Columbus Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of trumpeter, Byron Stripling. His band on this tour is: Eric Augis - piano, Greg Wolfram - bass, and Jon Suntken - drums. Cover is $10.

Saturday, September 8 at 6pm

Catch an early set by The Blue Wisp Young Lions Band. These are the best up and coming high school players in the area who have auditioned for this ensemble. Come to hear them and give them encouragement and support! Free admission. Donations gratefully accepted.

Internationally Touring Saxophonist 
Greg Abate Quartet 
Greg Abate       
Greg Abate,  jazz saxophonist, flutist, composer continues as an International Jazz/Recording Artist with 150 days a year touring the globe. In the mid 70's after finishing a four year program at Berklee College Of Music, Greg played lead alto for the Ray Charles Orchestra for 2 years. Following this and other experiences Greg ventured out as post hard bop soloist playing Jazz Festivals, Jazz Societies and Jazz Clubs throughout the U.S. Canada and abroad, including most of Europe, UK, and Moscow and Georgia Russia. He recorded his first CD Live At Birdland NYC in 1991 on the Candid Jazz Label with the trio of James Williams, Rufus Reid and Kenny Washington. As of this date Greg has recorded over 12 other recordings and was nominated for a Grammy for his 2004 recording EVOLUTION in four categories. At his Blue Wisp engagement Greg will be joined by Randy Villars - piano, Jim Anderson - bass, and Art Gore - drums. $10 cover charge.

Making a rare visit to Cincinnati, trumpeter Wade Baker will be enlisting the talents of some of the area's finest musicians to bring you his own unique blend of standard and original jazz repertoire. This year, Wade and his group has already released a live record (Live At The Chatterbox) and has also been featured at the Garden Gate Wine & Jazz Festival (Huntingburg, In), Buttercream Festival (Miamisburg, Oh), Pensacola Jazz Society Concert Series (Pensacola, FL) Fall in Greenville (Greenville, SC) in addition to constantly touring the United States playing such clubs as Miles' Cafe in Manhattan, Brown St. Club in Greenville, SC, the Chatterbox Jazz Club in Indianapolis, the Tonic Room (Chicago, IL) and many more nationally acclaimed jazz venues throughout his journeys. Please come a be a part of a fun filled evening of music and help keep jazz alive in Cincinnati! $5 cover charge.
