Steward Health a Dallas head-quartered hospital system and provider group with locations in 8 states has been is under federal investigation. Steward filed for bankruptcy protection in May. On July 15, 2024 CMS issued the below communication to Plans. Plans will need to assess impact on network adequacy, if any.
CMS has received information about an upcoming significant network change due to the pending bankruptcy of Steward Health Care, which is an extensive hospital system and physician practice group headquartered in Dallas, TX. Steward Health Care operates 31 hospitals across eight states, around 400 facility locations, 4,500 primary and specialty care physicians, 3,600 staffed beds, and has a company-wide workforce of nearly 30,000 employees. Steward Health Care provides care to over two million patients annually.
This closure will impact all MA plans operating within Massachusetts and several affiliated hospitals in Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas. It's important to identify the affected MA plans and ensure their compliance with CMS Network Adequacy Standards according to 42 CFR 422.116. Organizational responsibility requires maintaining a network of suitable providers to ensure consistent access to covered services and meet the needs of enrollees at all times.
