Virginia Beach, VA — Symphonicity, The Symphony of Virginia Beach, closes its VOICES OF AMERICA season with America the Beautiful on Sunday, April 12, 2026, at 3 PM at the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts.
As the culminating event of the season, America the Beautiful explores the many voices that define the American musical landscape—from the expansive, folk-inspired sound of Aaron Copland to the jazz-rooted legacy of Duke Ellington and the Appalachian influences of contemporary composer and mandolin virtuoso Jeff Midkiff.
The program opens with Copland’s iconic “Hoedown” from Rodeo, followed by the hauntingly intimate Quiet City, featuring Symphonicity’s own Rena Long (English horn) and Robyn Card (trumpet). Their performance highlights the artistry within the orchestra’s own ranks.
Midkiff takes center stage in his mandolin concerto From the Blue Ridge, a work commissioned by David Stewart Wiley and the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra that has been performed more than 30 times around the country. Cast in classical form while drawing deeply from bluegrass and folk traditions, the work brings a uniquely American voice to the concert hall. Symphonicity concertmaster Megan Van Gomple will also be featured in a flashy cadenza with the guest artist.
“I can’t wait to play it with Symphonicity,” said Midkiff. “It’s going to be a blast!”
The 90-minute program concludes with Ellington’s Three Black Kings, featuring Symphonicity bassoonist turned saxophonist Stephanie Sanders in a richly textured score that draws on symphonic jazz, bebop, Afro-Brazilian influences, and R&B, all written for full orchestra. This powerful and reflective work honors figures of spiritual and cultural significance, culminating in a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
“This concert represents the full spectrum of American musical expression,” said Music Director Daniel W. Boothe. “It’s a celebration of where we’ve been as a nation—and a reflection of the many voices that continue to shape our cultural identity.”
As part of this special season finale, Symphonicity will also unveil its 2026–27 season, offering audiences a first look at what lies ahead.
