BATTLE OF THE BLUES HARPS
LAZER LLOYD, ISRAEL'S KING OF BLUES ROCK TOURS SOUTHLAND

Lazer Lloyd, Israel's King of Blues Rock,

on U.S. Tour, Plays The Mint this Monday

Lazer Lloyd, Israel's "King of Blues Rock," brings his fresh sound, new songs, and deep roots to the Southland for some select solo shows and trio performances with all-star backing, performing locally at The Mint, 6010 W. Pico Blvd., Los Angeles, Monday, November 24. 9:45 p.m. $8./advance, $10./door. Info: (323) 954-9400 or http://themintla.com/.

Lazer Lloyd is an Israeli singer/songwriter and international recording artist influenced by blues, gospel, southern rock, and the great guitar traditions of power and groove from Jimi Hendrix to Wes Montgomery. His music takes the audience into his world from the tender moments of a traveling musician in the song "By Your Side," to a man struggling with life in "Talk." Lloyd opens hearts with his "world soul groove" sound on "Way Down" and "Back Porch," and then rocks with intensity and joy on irresistible tunes such as "Good Man Down," "Set My Soul Free," and "Rockin' in the Holy Land."

Lloyd has crossed over into the Israeli mainstream music scene and has been featured on Israeli Channel 8 TV's "Guitar Heroes," Channel 10's "London and Kirschenbaum," Israeli Channel 2's "Good Morning," 88FM, and Yoav Kutner's Army Radio program.

GREAT SHOWS FOR MUSIC FANS AT THE SABAN THEATRE
DVD REVIEW:  Hot Love On Me So Strong - The Blues of South L.A.

Kari Fretham

Hot Love on Me
So Strong:

The Blues of South L.A.

Distinct Ink

The juke joints and hidden secrets of South Los Angeles blues are revealed in this powerful documentary by author and producer Kari Fretham. As she reminds us in the film's opening minutes, the blues is close at hand; just look around you. Fretham shares footage from several South L.A. juke joints and blues gathering spots with the music always taking center stage. Numerous local artists appear in the film and they all share a love of the blues. Over a hundred local blues artists are featured singing and playing the blues at eight local sites where jazz and blues take on special meaning.

Fretham's documentary comes from today's celebration of the music by the people. Bell's Blues Workshop at 97th and Avalon features downhome expression along with great video evidence that the music is loved by all. Some of the locations have a sense of permanence while others open up for special occasions. As South Side Slim attests throughout the film, it's all well-liked and it's all for the music. At Ruth's 4th of July Party and Bobby Warren's Labor Day Party, area fans gather for a good time to enjoy music that warms the heart.

Brother Wade's Celebration at H&D Trucking Yard has a special connection to South Side Slim because he developed his blues guitar playing there at his father's business. Now, after all these years, he and many others share their love for the music at this central location where friends meet and guests arrive to open arms. Not too far away, there's The Barnyard at 97th and Main where a large gathering honors the music from deep down in the soul. Arriving at this celebration folks can feel right at home in the company of like-minded blues lovers.

Jackson's Nightspot at 68th and Western brings old friends together; it's the kind of place where musicians and music lovers return year after year. All it takes is some space for tables, chairs, a band, and the sounds that live forever. Spade Castle at 89th and Broadway captures the essence of local goodwill as folks see old friends and familiar faces. The Living Room at Crenshaw and Adams provides yet another local spot for friends of the blues to gather and celebrate. All of the musicians featured in the film come from the professional ranks of jazz and blues; however, most deserve wider recognition. Thanks to film documentaries such as this one the word gets around.        -- Jim Santella
