SPECIAL ACTIVITIES

Oath of Office

The district had two open Board seats in the November 5, 2024, election. Incumbent Trustee Carrie

Hayashida was elected to represent Trustee Area A and Jaime Needham was elected to represent

Trustee Area E. Superintendent Silavs administered the oath of office to Trustees Hayashida and Needham. 

Organizational Meeting

Each year the Board holds an organizational meeting during which, among other administrative tasks, officers are elected and a schedule of regular meetings is developed for the upcoming calendar year.

Regular Board Meetings are typically scheduled for the second Thursday of each month with open session beginning at 7:00 p.m. and closed session immediately preceding (as necessary). 


Meeting agendas are published online at least 72 hours prior to the meeting date. Special Board Meetings may be scheduled as needed throughout the year, and agendas for those meetings are published 24 hours prior. 


Meetings are held in the Board Room at the district's administrative headquarters, located at 5816 Corporate Avenue in Cypress. Regular meetings are also live-streamed via Zoom, and a Zoom link is published on each meeting's agenda. Meeting videos are posted on the district's YouTube channel.

BOARD ACTIONS

Consent Agenda

The Board approved a number of routine consent items, including gifts and grants to the district, Human Resources transactions, purchase orders and checks, and contract renewals. Details regarding these items can be found in the Board meeting agenda.  


Grant Funding for Math Textbook Adoption Program

An agreement with the Orange County Superintendent of Schools was approved for grant funding of $10,000 and assistance in selecting and adopting mathematics instructional materials.


Sign Language and Interpreting Services

The Board approved entering into a master agreement with LiNKS Sign Language & Interpreting Services to provide sign language interpreting and spoken language services for families during school-related activities on an as-needed basis during the period November 21, 2024, through June 30, 2025. Specific costs will be submitted for Board approval as services are rendered.


Newsela Subscription Services for Clara J. King Elementary School

A one-year subscription for Newsela, a digital platform providing news articles and other instructional materials for teachers and students, was approved for King at a cost of $6,720, which will be paid using school site funds. 


Revised Classified Job Description and Salary Adjustment

As part of the district’s ongoing position classification review process, job descriptions are reviewed and salaries are compared with similar positions in neighboring elementary school districts. The Board approved a revised job description and salary adjustment for the Lead Transportation Trainer/Worker position, now titled Lead Bus Driver/Trainer, effective December 17, 2024.


Revised Classified Substitute Salary Schedule

An updated Classified Substitute Salary Schedule was approved which increases the hourly rate of pay for several substitute positions to meet the new statewide minimum wage of $16.50 per hour

and also to align with the pay rates of neighboring school districts. The affected positions are: Bus Driver/Utility Worker, Instructional Aide-English Language Development, Instructional Aide-Transitional Kindergarten, Paraeducator-Behavior, Paraeducator-Instruction, Preschool Teacher, Student Activity Supervisor, Student Activity Supervisor-Lead, Student Activity Supervisor-Coach.


Revised Management Employee Salary Schedule

The Management Employee Salary Schedule was revised to include the Superintendent’s salary information, as required by Assembly Bill 1997.


Completion of Districtwide Summer Deferred Maintenance Project

A Notice of Completion was approved for the 2024 Districtwide Summer Deferred Maintenance Project

by M.P. South, Inc. at a total cost of $577,870.70. The project included repair/replacement of asphalt at Morris and Landell, miscellaneous restriping at all six school sites, installation of a trash can wash-out station at Morris, repair/replacement of roofs for the Landell daycare building and modular restroom, and additional soundproofing at the district office facility.


Cypress Education Foundation Board of Directors

The Cypress Education Foundation Board of Directors is comprised of five members – the Superintendent, two directors appointed annually by the Superintendent, and two directors and an alternate appointed annually by the Board of Trustees. At the December meeting, the Board appointed Christine Barnes and Christie Parker as directors and Ethel Bowman as alternate director for 2025.


2024/25 First Interim Financial Report

The district is required to submit a First Interim Financial Report by December 15 of each year reflecting actual revenues and expenses as of October 31 as well as projected revenues and expenses through June 30. The Board approved the district’s 2024/25 First Interim Financial Report certifying a positive financial status for the remainder of the fiscal year and two subsequent fiscal years. A Second Interim Financial Report will be presented to the Board in March 2025. The First Interim Financial Report is available on the district website.
