Board of Trustees held on October 11, 2018
SPECIAL ACTIVITIES
Pledge of Allegiance
Cub Scout Pack 673 led the Pledge of Allegiance. Scouts participating were Cameron DeHoop, Aiden Gonzalez, Ian Hong, Austin Li, and Brady Zamora.
Kiwanis Book Donation
Kiwanis Club members Lydia Sondhi, Catherine Youngerman, Jim and Cathy Phillips, and Tim McLellan presented a gift of the following books for each school library:

  • Twelve Kinds of Ice
  • The Bone Sparrow
  • Voices From Colonial America – Delaware 1638-1776
  • Voices From Colonial America – New York 1609-1776
  • Voices From Colonial America – New Jersey 1609-1776

School Presentation: Steve Luther Elementary School  
Luther fifth grade students from Mr. Adam Keuhn's class demonstrated a STEM activity called Coding Unplugged. Students participating were Salena Adhikari, Lincoln Chung, Jude Kim, Jennifer Le, Ava Martin, Megan Nguyen, Nathan Nguyen, Tyler Nguyen, Jamie Templanza, and Jason Walters.
Staff Presentation: Student Achievement          
Julie Gautreau, Coordinator of Assessment and Technology, provided the Board with an overview of the district's 2018 California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) results. 
BOARD ACTIONS
University Affiliation Agreement
The district partners with various institutions of higher education to provide fieldwork experience to their students. This month, the Board approved an affiliation agreement with Loma Linda University for
speech and dietetic program students from October 12, 2018, through October 11, 2023.

King 2018/19 Single Plan for Student Achievement        
Education Code requires that schools participating in programs funded through the state's consolidated application process develop a Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) identifying goals for improving student achievement and addressing how funds will be used to improve academic performance. The Board approved the 2018/19 SPSA for Clara J. King Elementary School.

Revised 2018/19 and 2019/20 Academic Calendars          
Revised academic calendars, adding Open House and Back-to-School Night dates, were approved by the Board. The updated calendars are available on the district's website.

Completion of Landell Play Area Projects
In April 2018, the Board approved contracting with Dave Bang Associates for the installation of new play equipment and rubber surfacing at Landell. Both projects were completed at a total cost of $148,339.42, and the Board authorized filing notices of completion with the County of Orange.

Lighting Renovation Project at Landell
The Board approved contracting with M.P. South, Inc., for replacement of outdated lighting at Landell. The total cost of $47,003.78 is based on a previously awarded unit price bid master agreement and will be paid from Proposition 39 funding.

Budget Plan for 2018/19 One-Time Proposition 98 Discretionary Funding            
The Board approved the following budget plan for $706,000 in one-time discretionary funding from the state for 2018/19:

Technology Equipment (SMART Boards & Mobile Devices) - $665,000
Professional Development (Induction Program & Teacher Support) - $41,000
BOARD DISCUSSION
Williams Legislation Uniform Complaints, First Quarter 2018/19
The Board received a report indicating the district received no public complaints during the first quarter of the 2018/19 school year regarding deficiencies related to instructional materials, emergency or urgent facilities conditions that might pose a threat to the health or safety of students or staff, or teacher vacancy or misassignment.

Local Indicators for California School Accountability System
Tandy Taylor, Director of Instructional Services, provided the Board with a report of district progress on the state’s four local indicators: Basic Conditions for Learning, Implementation of Academic Standards, School Climate, and Parent Engagement. Reporting district progress to the Board of Trustees at a public meeting enables the district to achieve Met status on the California School Dashboard for 2018.
 
Process for Electing Board Officers         
The Board reviewed its process for annually electing Board officers, which takes place during the organizational meeting in December.
