Dear FPA San Francisco Members,
FPASF Board Member | Director of the Programs
This month, we’re excited to spotlight Reed Nothwang, an active and dedicated member of the FPA San Francisco board. Professionally, Reed works with Compound Planning, where his practice focuses primarily on partners at big law firms. “I’ve been fortunate to have great growth over the past year or so,” he says, “and am building a very healthy practice.” Personally, much of his time is spent with his three young children - two 4-year-olds and a 1-year-old. With kindergarten just around the corner, he’s enjoying these last years of having them home most days.
Within the board, Reed serves as Director of Programs, where he and his team design meaningful educational experiences for members. “We are focused on creating 8 special programs for 2026, and continuing to grow the FPASF chapter,” he explains. He’s been part of FPA for about four years, and on the board for three. What he values most is the chance to connect with planners outside of his own firm. “It can be easy to fall into the bubble of your own firm,” he shares, “but I feel like I learn so much from conversations with different advisors within our group.”
Outside of work and family, Reed is passionate about endurance sports and the outdoors. He’s climbed Mt. Whitney five times and is now training for his first 50k race. His guiding mantra reflects that drive: “When you think that you are done, you’re only 40% into what your body’s capable of doing. That’s just the limits that we put on ourselves.”
When it comes to unwinding, Reed and his wife are big fans of the TV show Survivor, and he’s just started reading Twain by Ron Chernow. Looking ahead, he says, “I’m looking forward to a year of settling. It’ll be my 2nd full year at my new firm, and 3rd full year on the board. I feel as though I’m starting to hit a groove that I’m excited about.”
Reed is also deeply involved in his community. He serves on the board of RotaCare San Rafael, which provides free medical services to people in Marin County. Together with his wife, he is also a foster parent and runs a support group for families and kids navigating the foster care system.
Reed’s energy, dedication, and collaborative spirit enrich both our chapter and the wider community. We’re grateful for his leadership on the Programs Committee and for the many ways he helps strengthen our profession.
Warmly,
Jeremiah Griffith, CFP®
