April 26 Northwest ISD Board Notes

The Northwest Independent School District Board of Trustees met Monday, April 26, during a regularly-scheduled meeting. This is a recap of the major actions and reports from the meeting. To see every item discussed or voted on, click here.

Trustees approve the renaming of former Haslet Elementary School

NISD Board of Trustees approved the recommendation to rename the building located at 501 Schoolhouse Road to Legacy Learning Center.

Out of the 49 nominations received, 18 unique names were submitted and 12 names met the naming criteria. Before recommending the change to the board, the committee also considered approximately 125 additional names that were previously submitted.

The Legacy Learning Center currently houses the Special Programs Center. Renovations, which were funded by taxpayers in the 2017 bond, continue in other parts of the building, which will become a professional development center and home to the Horizons/RISE programs.

The name Legacy Learning Center allows the district to honor staff and educators by designating a location in the building for individuals who may not rise to the level of having a campus named after them, but have contributed to the “legacy” of Northwest ISD.

Suggestions included creating a Legacy Wall of plaques or photographs or naming rooms in the professional development center to honor teachers and community members who have helped to create a legacy for NISD.

NISD begins the process of moving transportation services in-house

In an effort to balance the district's budget, Tim McClure, Assistant Superintendent of Facilities, presented a recommendation to the board to terminate the district's current outsourced transportation contract with Reliant Transportation.

"We have gone through extensive research from other districts in a similar situation and we feel confident this will be a good direction for NISD," McClure said.

By bringing NISD's transportation services in-house, the district anticipates a savings of approximately $3 million.

No additional staffing needs are expected but some roles might be adjusted based on the shift of personnel. The bus fleet utilized by the district are currently owned by NISD.

Resolution to enter into a contract to purchase land in Denton County, Texas within the Wildflower Ranch Development.

In other action, the board

Approved teacher contracts for the 2021-2022 school year.
Approved a partnership between North Central Texas College and NISD under which high school students from NISD may be allowed to enroll in college-level courses at North Central Texas College and receive college credit and high school credit simultaneously, including welding.

Recognitions

The board recognized members of the Wilson Middle School Wind Ensemble for being selected to perform at the 2020 Music for All Music Conference in Indianapolis.

Trustees also recognized Northwest ISD students who earned a first place finish in the 2021 PTA Reflections contest.
