National Board Certified Teachers Recognized

At our Feb. 4 meeting, the Board recognized five Barrington 220 teachers who recently earned or renewed their National Board Certification. The credential is considered to be one of the most respected nationwide among educators. Teachers earn the certification through a rigorous process and must renew every five years. Barrington 220 currently has a total of 40 educators who have earned National Board Certification. Congratulations to Maricela Mendez on earning her initial certification, and to Elizabeth Bure, Allison Hudson, Paula Levin, and Michele Wiese on earning their recertification this year! National Assessment Performance Update

In his Feb. 4 Superintendent’s Report, Dr. Winkelman noted that on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), Illinois students had the second-highest 8th grade reading performance and the fifth-highest 8th grade mathematics performance in the country. Based on results from our district’s winter assessments (MAP and Fastbridge), Barrington 220 students continue to achieve at high levels. Sunny Hill students have shown significant growth in math from last winter to this winter, which is a core area of focus for the 2024-2025 school year.

Kindergarten Eligibility Policy

In his Feb. 4 Superintendent’s Report, Dr. Winkelman provided an overview of the district’s kindergarten eligibility policy. Barrington 220’s policy (7:50, School Admissions and Student Transfers To and From Non-District Schools), which was adopted in 2003, states:

  • To be eligible for admission, a child must be five years old on or before September 1 of that school term.
  • A child entering first grade must be six years of age on or before September 1 of that term.

Though the policy has been revised since it was first adopted, the age eligibility portion of the policy has not changed. Dr. Winkelman noted that the district is committed to making placement decisions in alignment with children’s needs, and encourages families with questions regarding kindergarten enrollment and their child’s readiness to reach out to their Barrington 220 elementary principal.

2025-2026 Instructional Materials Presentation

At our Feb. 4 meeting, the Board heard a presentation on the proposed 2025-26 Instructional Materials Report, which is the district’s annual list of textbooks and instructional materials that are being used in classrooms. The district has a robust curriculum review cycle in order to ensure the curriculum is dynamic and meets the evolving needs of students. The Board will vote on the 2025-26 instructional materials at our Feb. 18 meeting. Click here to view the presentation.

Board Approves 2025-2026 Student Fees

At our Feb. 4 Board meeting, the Board approved student fees for the 2025-26 school year. Fees for the 2025-2026 year will remain consistent with the 2024-2025 fees, except for ID replacement, which will increase by $0.50 to $5.50 per student to reflect the higher costs associated with the new scanning system implemented at all schools. School Resource Officer Appreciation Day is Feb. 15

In his Feb. 4 Superintendent’s Report, Dr. Winkelman noted that Feb. 15 is School Resource Officer Appreciation Day. He expressed his gratitude for Barrington 220’s three full-time school resource officers: Officer Eve Gaitan (Barrington High School, left), Officer Isaiah Recinos (Prairie Campus, center), and Officer Ranae Cirrincione (Station Campus, right). He also thanked Officer Michael Gruenthal for standing in for Officer Cirrincione during her leave, and Chief David Daigle for the Barrington Police Department’s partnership.

Roslyn Student Shares Why Roslyn is #ThePlaceToB

Throughout the 2024-2025 school year, students from each Barrington 220 school are making special appearances at our Board of Education meetings to share updates on their school experiences. At our Feb. 4 meeting, we welcomed Maisy Malkin, a 5th grader at Roslyn Road Elementary School. During Maisy’s time at Roslyn, she has enjoyed the school’s variety show and Culture Walk-Around. She has appreciated working with Roslyn teachers to become more artistic and express herself more confidently through speaking and writing. Maisy says Roslyn is #ThePlaceToB because it has helped her become more responsible, resilient and accountable! Click here to view Maisy’s update.
