Board approves calendar for 2021-2022 school year

	2021-2022 Calendar

The Ray-Pec School Board on Jan. 28 approved the calendar for the 2021-2022 school year. The first day of school will be Monday, Aug. 23.

For winter break, students will be dismissed early on Dec. 17. Classes are not in session through Jan. 2. School resumes on Jan. 3, 2022.

Spring break is scheduled from March 21-25, 2022. The calendar does not include make-up days for inclement weather. Alternative Method of Instruction (AMI) days, also known as virtual instruction days, will be used for the first five inclement weather days. Proposition S includes new freshman center

Proposition S is the name for the $72 million no-tax-rate-increase bond issue that Ray-Pec voters will see on the ballot on April 6.

The School Board approved placing the bond issue on the ballot to support priorities identified in the long-range facility plan.

If approved, the bond issue would allow the District to take the first step toward a second high school. Some of the funds would be used to build a freshman center on district-owned property adjacent to Ray-Pec East Middle School.

Future building projects can expand the freshman center into Ray-Pec's second high school over the next five to 10 years, depending on enrollment and future bond elections.

Paul Turner to be new assistant principal at RPSMS

Paul Turner will be the new assistant principal at Ray-Pec South Middle School, effective July 1. The Ray-Pec School Board approved the hiring at its Jan. 28 meeting.

Turner previously served as a secondary teacher and football coach in Colton, S.D.; Commerce, Texas; Liberty, Mo.; and Kansas City, Mo.; before accepting his current leadership position as Curriculum Coordinator for Social Studies for Kansas City, Mo., Public Schools.

He said the sense of community attracted him to Ray-Pec. "The Ray-Pec School District feels like a family atmosphere that is growing, and this is something that I want to be part of going forward," Turner said.

South Middle School Principal Dr. Randy Randolph believes that Turner's leadership skills, desire to make a positive impact on students and their families in our community, and teacher development experience will be an excellent fit at South Middle School.

Turner served in the U.S. Army for nine years. He and his wife, Erin, live in Kansas City with their three children, Anayah, 11; Amria, 6; and Pierce, 4. Turner will replace Eric Arnold, who is retiring at the end of the 2020-2021 school year. Read more

First semester honor rolls for students in grades 6-12 are now posted online.
