Board discusses safety & security, personalized learning and future readiness
This week the Barrington 220 Board of Education held its first "CommUNITY Conversation" at Station Campus. Instead of a regular Board meeting where action items are voted on, the meeting featured apresentation about three of thesix strategic priorities in the district's strategic plan, Framework 220. The three strategic priorities discussed included:
Health & Well-being
Personalized Learning
Future Readiness
Health & Well-being: District leaders discussed the safety and security aspect of Health & Well-being. Thanks to the community's support of a $147 million referendum in 2020, Barrington 220 has been able to significantly enhance safety and security across the district through improved technology and facility upgrades. In addition, the district has worked with the Barrington Police Department for many years to provide a full-time School Resource Officer at Barrington High School. The district is currently discussing adding another School Resource Officer at the middle school level.
Personalized Learning: District leaders shared examples of students at all levels demonstrating the personal success skills from the district'sLearner Profile, which was developed during the Framework 220 strategic planning process.
Future Readiness: The district has created a Flexible Learning Cohort made up of BHS staff members, who are looking at how to expand the district's Blended Learning Program. The program gives students the opportunity to learn through face-to-face interaction with their teachers in a classroom and by using technology to complete work in small groups or outside of class. District leaders also shared details about the professional development that was provided to teachers who are currently utilizing the new learning spaces made possible by the $147 million referendum. The professional development focused on how teachers can best utilize the new spaces to improve the educational experience for students.
After the presentation, community members were able to ask questions and take a tour of the new classroom addition at Station to see how the space encourages personalized learning and future readiness. Click here to listen to the full presentation.
The Board of Education plans to host a few more Community Conversations throughout the school year. Dates and times will be shared at a later time.
The Board is seeking public feedback regarding the Illinois Association of School Board's (IASB) 2022 resolution proposals. Every November school boards from across the state send a delegate to the Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB) conference in Chicago. At this conference, the delegates vote on proposed resolutions IASB will pursue in the upcoming legislative sessions. This year’s conference will take place Nov. 17-20. The Board is holding a public hearing at its next regularly scheduled meeting on Nov. 1, where community members can share their thoughts on the resolutions up for approval.
