BOCC Recognizes Georgene Charles for 35 Years of Service to the Antietam Memorial Illumination

The Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) recognized Georgene Charles for her 35 years of service managing and directing the Memorial Illumination at Antietam National Battlefield.

The Memorial Illumination is the largest memorial illumination in North America and has become one of Washington County’s most significant annual events. More than 1,500 volunteers come together each year to place 23,110 candle luminaries throughout the battlefield, representing every Union and Confederate casualty from the Battle of Antietam.

The BOCC recognized Georgene for her dedication, attention to detail and countless hours of volunteer service. Her work included coordinating volunteers, working with the National Park Service and government partners, securing supplies and even preparing food for volunteers. Through her commitment, she helped bring national attention to the sacrifices made during the Battle of Antietam while positively promoting Washington County.

The BOCC expressed its sincere appreciation to Georgene for her 35 years of service, volunteerism and lasting impact on the Memorial Illumination and the community.

BOCC Recognizes September 2026 as Citizens’ Emergency Preparedness Month



The Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) recognized September 2026 as “Citizens’ Emergency Preparedness Month” by presenting a proclamation to the Office of Emergency Management.

The proclamation emphasizes the importance of being prepared for emergencies and disasters, which can occur at any time and without warning. The BOCC encouraged residents to take proactive steps by creating a family emergency plan, assembling an emergency supply kit and staying informed about potential hazards and risks in the community.

The recognition also highlights the efforts of Emergency Management, Emergency Services, Fire and EMS, and Police personnel who work to strengthen the community’s preparedness and support first responders during emergencies.

The BOCC encourages all Washington County residents to take time this month to prepare themselves, their families and their communities for emergencies.

MACo Provides Annual Update to Washington County

The Maryland Association of Counties (MACo) visited Washington County to provide an update on state policy issues, county priorities and the upcoming 2027 Maryland General Assembly session. MACo President MC Keegan-Ayer and Executive Director Michael Sanderson discussed MACo’s role in advocating for county governments, providing educational opportunities and supporting effective local government.

The discussion included key issues affecting counties across Maryland, including affordability, housing, transportation, education and the implementation of the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future. MACo also heard feedback from the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) on local priorities and issues that can help inform its legislative efforts in Annapolis. 

BOCC Recognizes Sharpsburg Water Treatment Plant for AWOP Award

The Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) recognized the Sharpsburg Water Treatment Plant for receiving the Silver Level Area-Wide Optimization Program (AWOP) Award from the Maryland Department of the Environment.

The award recognizes the plant’s consistent performance in meeting strict turbidity goals, including individual filter effluent (IFE) and combined filter effluent (CFE) performance standards.

The Board congratulated the Sharpsburg Water Treatment Plant team for their dedication to maintaining high standards and providing quality drinking water to the community.
