Board of Education Recognizes RUSD's SkillsUSA Students 

On April 25-26 students from Case, Horlick and Park High Schools participated at the 44th annual Wisconsin SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills conference in Madison, a CTE leadership and technical skills competition.

The following students earned medals in their events and were recognized for their impressive accomplishments at Monday's Board of Education meeting.



Case High School
  • Jordan Bloemers earned first place in Welding. This earned him an invitation to Nationals in Louisville, Ky.
  • Amanda Kemper earned first place in the FaciliThon Challenge. She earned an invitation to Nationals in Louisville, Ky.
  • David Cervantes earned second place in diesel repair. 
  • Seth Coronado earned a second place in CNC machining.
  • Mickey Meredith earned third place in advertising design where he designed his own creative business cards and brochures.
  • Amanda Kemper and Dwight Holley earned third place in Urban Search and Rescue. They worked as a team to navigate a course with a wireless robot in record time.
Horlick High School
  • Gerardo Erder earned first place in Job Demonstration (A) presenting Autodesk Inventor Mechanical 3-D Loft-Assembly design. Gerardo also earned a trip to the National SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills Conference in Louisville, Ky.
  • Kaitlyan Faust earned second place in Job Demonstration (A) presenting Autodesk Inventor Mechanical 3D-CAD Coil Assembly design.
Park High School
  • Cruz AvilaGilberto Lopez and Raishein Thomas won first place in the Community Service competition for their work on their Tiny Home for veterans. This also earned them an invitation to Nationals in Louisville, Ky.
  • Joe Krueger placed first in the $150 and over category for Woodworking.
  • Luis Guereca placed second in the $150 and over category for Woodworking.
  • Jayden Norton placed first in the in the $50-$150 category for Woodworking.
  • Mitchell Jaeck placed second in the $50-$150 category for Woodworking.
  • Christian Ferguson placed 3rd in the under $50 category for Woodworking.
Academy Ambassadors Recognized for Hard Work

This fall, RUSD launched the Academies of Racine at Case, Horlick and Park High Schools. 

For the last year, several students have taken on the role of Academy Ambassadors, working hard to help students transition to the new Academy model and guiding them to discovertheir focus of study. 

On Monday, the Academy Ambassadors (pictured below) were recognized by the Board of Education for their hard work and commitment to their school and its students.

Park High School's Emma Widmar is a 2017 Presidential Scholar Semifinalist

Park High School senior  Emma Widmar  has been selected as a semifinalist for the 2017 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. The semifinalists were selected from nearly 5,100 candidates.

Inclusion in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating high school seniors. Scholars are selected on the basis of their academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in the community and school activities.

Emma was recognized by the Board of Education for her academic excellence Monday evening. Presidential Scholars will be announced later this month. 


RUSD's Three New Schools Earn Top Project Award

Last month, Riley Construction was awarded a 2016 Top Project award by the Daily Reporter for RUSD's three new schools! 

The Top Projects award is a chance to honor those in the industry - generals, subcontractors, architects, engineers and owners - whose projects met and exceeded expectations in 2016.

On Monday, the Board thanked Riley Construction for their incredible dedication and commitment to our schools and our students. 

In addition, the Board also recognized RUSD administration, school principals, buildings and grounds staff and all school staff members who put in many long days to make sure their school was a welcoming place for students and staff.


Superintendent's Report

2016-17 Quarter 4 Report of Referendum Spending and Maintenance Planning
On Monday evening, Chief Operations Officer David Hazen presented to the Board of Education the Quarter 4 Referendum Spending Report.

Hazen explained that from 2014-2017 the District has spent roughly $8.1 million on major maintenance projects, $10.2 million on new construction and $3.4 million on technology.

In addition, Hazen also outlined some facility projects for 2017-2018 pending Board approval such as Case High School track, Horlick Library renovations and Park High School Theater updates. [ Read more]

Middle School: My School. My Choice Update
Chief of Communication & Community Engagement Stacy Tapp updated the Board about the middle school plan: My School. My Choice. Last week, the group of teachers, REA representatives, administrators, principals, students and parents met again to continue to plan the next steps in this work.

Right now, there are two community listening sessions planned for May 22 and May 25 ( click here for more information about these sessions). In addition, Tapp explained that anyone willing to get involved in this work is encouraged to sign up for a committee on the District website.

Board Development 

Knapp Community School and United Way of Racine County Partnership
On Monday, Jamie Racine from the United Way of Racine County gave the Board an update regarding the community school model.

Racine explained to the Board that so far this year they have enrolled 175 students in after school programs and provided more than 600 hours of programming outside of the school day.

Racine also provided the Board an update regarding family engagement and spoke about the various after school activities offered for students and their families including free dental clinics, tax preparation help, mental health support and others. [ Read more

Virtual Learning Program
On Monday evening, Director of Digital and Virtual Learning James O'Hagan shared with the Board an update on RUSD's virtual learning program.

O'Hagan outlined a plan to make virtual personal which includes creating a new space for virtual learning inside the Kurten Building located on Northwestern Ave.

"Students who are in virtual schools or programs many times have their functional needs met. However, many students still have social or emotional needs their virtual schools or programs are not meeting. Having a physical space provides a connection to a community," O'Hagan said.

O'Hagan also explained to the Board that the reinvented virtual learning would be a program, not a school, incorporating online and blended learning. [ Read more]

Action Items

2016-17 Budget Adjustments
On Monday evening, the Board approved the 2016-2017 budget adjustments. The 2016- 2017 budget was approved in October of 2016 and it has been used as a basis for the District's expenditures throughout the fiscal year.

This year, the District experienced savings from not needing to allocate funds from the contingency. In addition, special education pupil transportation savings were recognized, lower costs for textbooks and curriculum were experienced and the purchase of classroom furniture was deferred until the next fiscal year. Goodland Elementary School Start and End Time Schedule
On Monday, the Board approved new start and end times for Goodland Elementary School.

Beginning this fall, Goodland Elementary School will start at 7:20 a.m. and end at 2:05 p.m. [ Read more]

Sonnenberg School Boundary
The Board of Education approved the Sonnenberg School attendance area.

In March, the District received a notification that Sonnenberg School will be opening a facility in Mount Pleasant for the 2017-18 school year in the RUSD boundary. State law requires private schools to provide attendance areas for the schools to the District for Board of Education approval by April 1 of each year. Sonnenberg School is claiming all of RUSD's boundary as part of their school attendance area. [ Read more]

Reading, English and Language Arts (ELA) Resources for K-12
On Monday, the Board approved the purchase of the Lucy Calkins Units of Study in Reading and Writing, classroom libraries, Schoolwide Fundamentals and professional development for a total of $619,247 beginning in the 2017-18 school year.

Reading and Writing Workshop integrates a Balanced Literacy approach to literacy instruction. Lucy Calkins' Units of Study for Reading and Writing as well as Schoolwide's Fundamentals program support current (best) instructional practices in Literacy. The program includes teacher resource kits involving teacher guides and mentor texts for Reading, and Writing. Middle School will also receive kits for Grammar instruction. [ Read more]

English Language Development (ELD) Resources for English as a Second Language
On Monday, the Board approved the purchase of the National Geographic Learning (Reach, Inside and Edge) for a total not to exceed $311,216 beginning in the 2017-18 school year.

National Geographic Learning ELD Resources are research-based programs designed to provide active learning opportunities, scaffolded instruction and flexibility to meet instructional priorities with the aim of moving all English language learners (ELLs) to language proficiency and reading independence. Center for Educational Leadership and Technology Contract for Information Technology Planning Services
The Board approved the total allocation of $129,000 for the continuation of utilizing services from CELT.

The information systems department has contracted with the Center for Educational Leadership and Technology (CELT) to build a rolling, comprehensive technology and curriculum integration plan for RUSD. [ Read more]

Energy Efficiency Tax Levy Related to Jerstad-Agerholm School
The Board of Education approved the resolution establishing the energy efficiency tax levy for the debt costs associated with Trane U.S. Inc. for the 2017-18 through 2024-25 school years. [ Read more]

WE Energies Easement at Jerstad-Agerholm Site
WE Energies has requested an easement on District property located at the Jerstad-Agerholm School. The easement would allow for work to be done to "install underground utility facilities."
On Monday, the Board approved the easement on District property located at Jerstad-Agerholm K8. [ Read more]

Horlick High School Library ADA Improvements
The Board of Education approved the construction of new ADA improvements at the Horlick High School library at a cost not to exceed $167,774 to Bukacek Construction. [ Read more]

Horlick High School Science Classroom Addition Construction and Classroom Remodeling
The Board of Education moved this action item to the upcoming study session. At that time, David Hazen and Bryan Arnold will bring forth more information regarding total cost of the project.

The Board of Education moved this action item to the upcoming study session. At that time, David Hazen and Bryan Arnold will bring forth more information regarding total cost of the project.

Racine Alternative Education Facilities Construction for Turning Point Academy and Virtual School at 2333 Northwestern Avenue 
On Monday, the Board of Education approved construction of the new Turning Point Academy and Virtual School facilities at a cost not to exceed $1,863,864.28.

The facilities for the Turning Point Academy will consist of approximately 11,670 square feet and consist of classrooms, office, cafeteria and support spaces to accommodate an expected program need of 60-80 students. The Virtual School space will consist of approximately 4,083 square feet. [ Read more]
