"What We Have Gained from What We Lost" by Caleb Norton, George Washington Carver Center for Arts and Technology. At the 38th Annual BCPS High School Art Exhibition, this drawing earned first place in the Jacob B. Laubheimer & Henry Jones BCPS Scholarship Awards and was a finalist in the awards sponsored by Azreal, Franz, Schwab, Lipowitz & Solter, LLC. The exhibition is on display at the Towson University StarTUp at The Armory (307 Washington Ave, Towson 21204) through Friday, July 31.

Artist statement excerpt:

The idea behind "What We Have Gained from What We Lost" revolves around how weird and unworldly life forms have risen, evolved, and fallen throughout history, changing the ecology on Earth, and how people are constantly finding new extinct species that change understanding about biological past and current animal species. I drew from both observations of glass jars and desks as well as reference photos, sketched in graphite and outlined in charcoal, toned values with shaved compressed charcoal and paper towel, shared with vine charcoal and charcoal pencils, erased to get highlights.

Since 2014, this innovative program has engaged more than 65,000 BCPS students, staff, and community members in more than 5,000 hands-on litter clean-ups, removing nearly 420,000 pounds of trash from our communities, preventing it from polluting our waterways.

From May 2025 through April 2026, the Clean Green 15 Litter Challenge involved 63 BCPS schools that conducted 832 clean-ups with 7,782 volunteers who collected 3,654 bags of litter and removed 45,715 pounds of trash and debris.

The list of winners and recognition of project partners and supporters can be found in a new Mission Moment blog post. Additional photos from the event can be found on Flickr.

a word from Dr. Rogers

June 15, 2026

Dear Reader:

The end of the 2025-26 school year is tomorrow, Tuesday, June 16, for more than 108,000 BCPS students.

As students leave our classrooms, we thank them for their attention, engagement, diligence, and curiosity. We thank their families and our community members for unwavering support.

And we thank the incredibly talented staff of BCPS for another school year focused on the academic achievement and personal wellbeing of our students.

At the end of every school year, many of our staff members earn local, statewide, regional, and even national honors. This recognition is well-deserved. Across the county and in our central offices, BCPS staff demonstrate every day their ability to weather challenges and continue moving forward.

I wish our students, staff, and graduates a summer filled with laughter, new adventures, and continued learning.

Regards,

Myriam Rogers, Ed.D.

Superintendent
