The Board of Trustees (BoT) met May 17 for its regular monthly meeting. Here are some highlights of the 60-minute gathering:
Trustee Roland Hwang to Help City. The City of Northville is planning its bicentennial celebration for 2027. Northville Mayor Brian Turnbull asked if a Northville Township Board of Trustees member would join the planning task force in a spirit of collaboration. Township Supervisor Mark J. Abbo asked Trustee Roland Hwang to take on that role. He accepted.
Mayor Turnbull also thanked members of the Township’s Historic District Commission, who have contacted him about helping with the bicentennial.
Deputy Fire Chief Tom Hughes Receives Thanks, Honors. The BoT, Clerk Cynthia L. Jankowski, Fire Chief Brent Siegel and Mayor Turnbull honored retiring Deputy Fire Chief Tom Hughes, who is leaving the Northville Township Fire Department after 21 years. He was appointed State Fire Marshal by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
“Over the years, I've worked alongside people who became family,” said Deputy Chief Hughes. “That's something different about the Fire Department that most other industries don't have. We grew up together through the incidents, through the milestones, through the triumphs and through my failures. That kind of connection is incredibly rare, but that's what makes the fire service and our Department, incredibly special. It's not just where we work, but it's who we are.”
Amendment to Michigan International Technology Center (MITC)’s Parcel 13. The Township approved MITC’s Parcel 13 Brownfield Plan Amendment, which adds the Plymouth Township Water Tower Parcel to MITC’s Act 381 brownfield tax increment financing (TIF) program. Plymouth Township requested inclusion to make the costs of potential infrastructure improvements on the parcel in the future.
Fire Vehicle Hellos & Goodbyes: The Fire Department budgeted for and will purchase a 2025 Wagoneer 4x4, equipped with emergency lights and sirens, to be used by the Deputy Fire Chief for daily details, emergency response and non-emergency calls for service. It’s priced at $70,713.
The Fire Department received authorization to put two 2012 Freightliner ambulances in an auction to recoup some of their costs. Both have high mileage and mechanical failure. Northville Township received a federal grant to replace one of those ambulances and as a result, one of the grant restrictions is that ambulance cannot be sold to be used as an ambulance. It must be repurposed.
Future Seven Mile Pathway Hits Milestone. Northville Township entered an inter-government agreement with Wayne County, which oversees Township roads, to construct a 10-foot-wide asphalt pathway along Seven Mile Road. At nearly two miles, it will connect Legacy Park, the I-275 Metro Trail, the Northville Recreation Area of Hines Drive and the Farmers Market property.
The project will bring upgrades to pedestrian signals near the Seven Mile Road and Main Street area. This includes new pedestrian signals across the CSX railroad tracks.
The pathway plans were submitted to Wayne County, MDOT and CSX in early May. Northville Township has received a $1.7 million TAP grant and $300,000 development grant from the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund Grant to help construct it.
The next step is to bid the project, most likely late summer, to start construction in the fall. Its completion is weather dependent and may be next year.
Sanitary Sewer Extension on Tap for Five Mile Road. The BoT approved a $465,598 change order to CI Contracting Inc. to tie in to an existing Western Township Utility Authority (WTUA) sewer that was put in last year. The extension goes under Five Mile Road and along Township properties. The sewer will serve MITC parcels in Northville Township on the north side of Five Mile Road, including Verita Telecommunications, SC Develop LLC and Schafer Development.
The project cost will be reimbursable through TIF money, so Northville Township expects the expenditures on this project will be reimbursed, Supervisor Mark J. Abbo explained.
Construction is expected to begin in June.
Northville Township Board of Trustee meetings are held the third Thursday of every month in Township Hall’s Assembly Room at 7 pm, unless noted otherwise. Please join us.
