The Board of Trustees (BoT) met July 17 for its regular monthly meeting. Here are some highlights of the 25-minute gathering:
Appointment Approved. Resident John Herald volunteered to join the Southeast Michigan Urban Deer Coalition to explore how deer are impacting Northville Township. Through this appointment, he will update the BoT on the growing deer population and the statewide efforts to reduce it. He also will report what solutions various agencies, including the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, are adopting to curb the aggressive encounters deer have with pets and residents, including a recent one involving a deer chasing a walker out for exercise. Treasurer Jason Rhines voted no on the appointment, with the remainder of the BoT voting yes, with the exception of Trustee Roland Hwang, who had an excused absence for July’s meeting.
Park Pathway Progress. Marv Gans Community Park is getting more pathways. Wayne County Parks through its Parks Millage Funding has allocated $93,877 to Northville Parks & Recreation to connect more non-motorized pathways made from crushed limestone at Marv Gans. The 2024-2025 funding will be in addition to the $100,000 Northville Parks & Recreation has in its budget to close other similar pathway gaps. The BoT approved the intergovernmental agreement with Wayne County Parks unanimously.
New Park Signs to Come. Northville Parks & Recreation is rebranding its department, complete with a new logo, new colors and new messaging. It worked with marketing company Destination by Design for the re-brand and asked for further assistance from the North Carolina company with sign design and implementation at Legacy Park for $90,000 and an additional $3,000 per kiosk panel. The agreement passed with Treasurer Rhines voting no.
Dugouts to Be Replaced. The dugouts at Marv Gans Community Park’s Field 5 will be replaced thanks to a reallocation of funds from the 2023-2024 Wayne County Park Millage Fund. Originally, the $44,290 was approved to go towards pickleball courts at Legacy Park. Since it got delayed because infrastructure, reforestation and Building 14 projects remain uncompleted, Northville Parks & Recreation asked to change the intergovernmental agreement with Wayne County. It was unanimously approved.
Early Voting Dates. Northville Public Schools Special Election Aug. 5 is seeking a millage rate renewal.
Early voting will take place at Township Hall July 26-Aug. 3 between 8 am-4 pm. The Clerk’s Office is open for extended hours on Saturday, Aug. 2 from 7 am-3 pm.
Construction Alert at Northville Community Center. Emergency brick repairs will begin near the handicap ramp at the Cady Street parking lot entrance at the NCC beginning Monday, July 21.
The ramp may be temporarily unavailable at times, and the repairs are expected to take a week.
