The Board of Trustees (BoT) met April 16 for its regular monthly meeting. Here are some highlights of the 72-minute gathering, where every motion was passed unanimously:
We Won the Gold! The Northville Township Fire Department has been awarded the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline EMS Gold Achievement Award. This national recognition reflects the Fire Department’s continued commitment to delivering high-quality emergency medical care to the community. Our residents really win!
The award recognizes EMS efforts that demonstrate excellence in the rapid identification, assessment and treatment of patients experiencing strokes and heart attacks. To qualify, agencies must meet the two consecutive year standard minimum of treating six stroke and six heart attack patients per year. Northville Township Fire transported 40 patients with chest pains or heart attacks and 50 with strokes in 2025.
Rotarian Resolution. The BoT honored the longest serving member of the Rotary Club of Northville. Herman Moehlman joined the Rotary Club of Northville April 4, 1961. His legacy of service to the community and beyond has spanned 65 years and counting. Utilizing his talents as a civil and tax attorney, Herm fostered the growth and impact of the Rotary Club of Northville. The Board offered its sincere appreciation for all he has contributed to the region.
Michigan’s First & Only Trail Town. Northville Parks & Recreation received kudos from the BoT for the community being recognized as an International Mountain Bicycling Association Trail Town, placing the community on the national map as a destination for outdoor recreation. It’s the first and only location in Michigan to receive this prestigious honor. The new trails at Legacy Park allowed us to apply.
The designation reflects years of planning, partnerships and investment in parks and trails. It highlights Northville’s commitment to health and wellness, economic vitality and environmental stewardship.
Parks & Recreation Director Derek O. Smith thanked Jeff Oles and the Motor City Mountain Biking Association for their involvement with the application.
Police Motorcycles Added to Fleet. The Police Department purchased two 2025 Harley-Davidson patrol motorcycles in the winter to add to its fleet for patrol and traffic use. The motorcycles, plus outfitting it with emergency equipment, weapon locks and decals, cost $63,777.30 or $31,888.65 per bike. They will be paid with forfeiture funds.
Inter-Government Agreement with Wayne County Approved. The BoT approved the inter-governmental agreement with Wayne County, which offered a 50/50 matching funds road program that will allow a handful of Township subdivisions to perform maintenance on their subdivision roads. The Township will manage the projects in conjunction with Fishbeck engineers, and the subdivisions will provide the matching funds. The Township will invoice Wayne County on a per-project basis to reimburse the Township within 30 days of invoicing. Upon reimbursement, there will be no net financial impact to our community.
Water and Sewer Rates to Increase 3%. The BoT approved the recommendation to increase water and sewer rates 3% beginning July 1 to ensure adequate capital investments and reserves to maintain our public infrastructure. It’s the first increase in a decade and returns customers to their 2016 rates. The increase adds approximately $20 per year for an average user. That’s a nickel a day.
Northville Community Center Roof Replacement to Begin. After a bid process, Unlimited Construction of South Lyon will replace a portion of the Northville Community Center roof, which has exceeded its service life. While the entire roof is in poor condition, priority has been given to the sections located above the living areas, meeting rooms, banquet spaces and administrative offices. This allows it to be cost effective, with work spread out over a few years. Construction on this first segment will not exceed $173,250. It is a part of the approved Shared Services Fund.
Marketing Plan to Guide Parks & Recreation. As part of the National Recreation & Park Association’s Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA), Northville Parks & Recreation needed a marketing plan approved by the BoT. It contracted with Herta Communications + Marketing to write one, which focuses on its guiding principles to create, connect and inspire. It will drive future communications from the Department.
Parking Lot at Legacy Park to Be Built. The BoT approved construction of a new gravel parking lot near the water tower on the western side of the property off Seven Mile Road. Because the Best Asphalt Inc. construction crew of Romulus was on site capping the Phase II hiking trails with stone, the cost to build the parking lot was cut in half. It will be completed for not more than $24,000.
New Headquarters Location for Northville Parks & Recreation Coming Soon. Northville Parks & Recreation is preparing to open its new headquarters soon at the Township’s former Water & Sewer Building, 16225 Beck Road, near Marv Gans Community Park, bringing parks and recreation teams together under one roof. It will close the main office at Hillside the week of May 11 to facilitate the move. Walk-in service will transition briefly to the Northville Community Center, 303 W. Main, and telephone lines will continue to be operational. The former office space at Hillside will transition to rec space. Residents are encouraged to stay tuned to northvilleparksandrec.org and Northville Parks & Recreation’s Facebook page for updates.

Former State Senator and Township Resident Bob Geake Died. Trustee Chris Roosen expressed condolences to the family and friends of longtime resident Bob Geake, who passed away. He served the community as a state senator for three terms, worked at a state mental hospital, served the Schoolcraft College Board and co-authored 1994 legislation creating Michigan's Office of Children's Ombudsman, a role then Governor John Engler later appointed him to serve in 2001. His family is holding a memorial service for him in June.
Save the Dates. The Board of Trustees will host a study session May 21 at 5:30 pm at Township Hall. The public is invited.
Trustee Roger Lundberg reports the 5th annual Golf-4-Good Charity Golf Outing Invitational will be Sept. 9. It benefits the Northville Community Foundation and Maybury Farm.
Township Wins Communications Award. For the third straight year, Northville Township won a national award from the National Association of Government Communicators. The recognition was for a display case curated by the Township’s Communications team at the Northville District Library in April 2025. The exhibit was designed to extend municipal storytelling beyond Township Hall to meet residents where they gather.
Featuring a 10-foot display case, authentic police and fire artifacts and interactive giveaways, the Township highlighted the purpose of the new public safety complex and how it impacts residents.
The timing of this award is especially meaningful, as Northville Township currently has another exhibit on display at the library throughout April. Residents are encouraged to visit by April 30 to experience how the Township is creatively connecting with our community.
Fire Chief Jesse Marcotte Wins Training Award. The International Society of Fire Service Instructors (ISFSI) honored Fire Chief Jesse Marcotte with the ISFSI Innovation in Training Award. It’s given annually to a member or membership program that has implemented impactful change within fire service training by incorporating creative instruction techniques.
The award team said, “Chief Jesse Marcotte is the personification of innovation in training. He possesses the rare combination of having a charismatic and dynamic classroom instructional style while also being just as savvy in front of a computer screen, developing content that will pull students in and keep them engaged.”
Northville Township Board of Trustee meetings are held the third Thursday of every month in Township Hall’s Assembly Room at 7 pm, unless noted otherwise. Please join us.
