Board recognizes National Merit Semifinalists |

At the Nov. 1 Barrington 220 Board of Education meeting, the Board recognized 17 Barrington High School students who have been named 2023 National Merit Semifinalists. The nationwide pool of semifinalists represent less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors. The students now have the opportunity to compete for about 7,500 scholarships, worth nearly $30 million. Congratulations to Gauri Chugh, Evan Cui, Kenny Guo, Matthew Hur, Hassan Kanji, Michael Karpov, Leo Lai, Alexandrea Lee, Aiden Londergan, Hailey Marconi, Ryan Mohsenzadeh, Olivia Paik, Himat Sidhu, Aarya Singh, Michael Sun, Kelly Yang, and James Zhang! Board recognizes Special Olympics award winners |

At its Nov. 1 Board meeting, the Board of Education recognized the achievements of four Barrington 220 Special Olympics athletes. During the 2022 spring games, the athletes took home medals in tennis, javelin and track & field. The athletes were led by Coaches Hal Kline and Jaclyn Pink. Board recognizes Lt. Steven Blake (BHS '12) in honor of Veterans Day |
|
In honor of Veterans Day on Nov. 11, Lieutenant Steven Blake of the United States Navy led meeting attendees in reciting the pledge of allegiance at the Nov. 1 Board meeting. Lt. Blake graduated from BHS in 2012 and went on to attend the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY. He has held various posts and has received several awards, including the Humanitarian Service Medal and the Navy & Marine Corps Achievement Medal. Thank you Lt. Framework 220: This fall the district created a design team for each of the six strategic priorities. Each design team is made up of approximately a dozen staff members from the District Leadership Team. The teams met last month and will also meet later this month to establish work areas within each priority. This work will be shared with the Board of Education in January. Design teams will then finalize and establish goals and action steps under each priority. Community feedback will be sought in the spring. ISBE School Report Cards: The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) recently released its annual report card showing school performance in areas such as academic progress, school climate, and culture. Barrington scored in the top 10% in the state. Click here to view information for Barrington 220. D220 works to close equity gaps |

At the Nov. 1 Board meeting, Nate Rouse, the district's Director of Equity, Race, and Cultural Diversity Initiatives, provided the Board with an update on Barrington 220's equity work. This year's state report card features a new informational tool called the Equity Journey Continuum, which allows districts to track their progress toward closing gaps in student achievement, opportunities and supports. The state has identified that Barrington 220 has small gaps in three goal areas: student learning, learning conditions, and elevating educators. The district is working to close these gaps through the work in its strategic planning process Framework 220, staff equity teams at each school, professional learning for staff related to equity and cultural competence, and the district’s Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS). Board approves BHS course offerings for next school year |

At the Nov. 1 Board meeting, the Board approved the BHS course offerings for the 2023-24 school year. Each year, the high school engages in a process to propose changes to the BHS Course Guide. These changes include new course additions, deletion of courses, changes to titles, weights, audience, prerequisites, or course descriptions. The Board's approval is a new effort this year in order to enhance transparency surrounding the course planning process. Click here to view the changes.
For the 2023-2024 school year, BHS is replacing the current PDF course guide with an online interactive tool that will be easier for parents and students to navigate. With the new interactive course guide, families can search for courses based on grade level and department. They will also be able to filter by courses that offer Honors credit or Post-high school credit like early college credit, Advanced Placement, or advanced career and technical education courses. D220 enrollment up compared to last year |

At the Nov. 1 Board of Education meeting, the Board heard an update on student enrollment numbers in Barrington 220. Thirty days into the 2022-23 school year, the district's total enrollment was 8,221 students, which is an increase by 56 students compared to last school year. The 30-day enrollment figures are a snapshot in time. Enrollment will fluctuate during the school year as it has in the past and the district will continue to monitor it accordingly. Board approves sale of former Woodland school |

At the Nov. 1 Board meeting, the Board approved the sale of the former Woodland School in Carpentersville to the Dundee Township Park District. Formerly known as Hickory Hill School, the school opened in 1958 for grades K-8. In 1987 the name of the school was changed to Woodland Elementary School. For many years, the building was home to the district's early childhood program, until it moved to the new Early Learning Center building in 2010. |

Boards holds public hearing on IASB resolutions |

At the Nov. 1 Board meeting, the Board held a public hearing on the proposed Illinois Association of School Board's (IASB) 2022 resolution proposals. Every November school boards from across the state send a delegate to the Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB) conference in Chicago. At this conference, the delegates vote on proposed resolutions IASB will pursue in the upcoming legislative sessions. The Board voted to appoint Board Member Steve Wang as Barrington 220's IASB delegate.This year’s conference will take place Nov. 17-20. Click here to view the 2022 resolutions.
