Cajun Classique to Cruise Down Bayou Teche
NEW IBERIA, La. -- The Southwest Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society is sponsoring a cruise through the heart of Cajun Country. Organized by Breaux Bridge-based Bayou Teche Experience aka Cajun Paddle, Cajun Classique takes place from Monday, April 3 - Sunday, April 9, 2017.

Registration for classic wooden boat enthusiasts is now open. Registration and details of the cruise route and daily excursions can be found at CajunClassique.com. This excursion represents the only classic boat cruise west of the Mississippi River.

"We've done this cruise twice now, and both were a stunning success not only for the participants but also the spectators along the route," said Cory Werk, tour co-director, local outfitter and advocate for the recreational use of Bayou Teche. "Where else can you cruise down the bayou and enjoy a taste of Cajun culture? This year, the Cajun Classique will touch all four parishes of Bayou Teche, with overnight stays in Berwick, New Iberia and Breaux Bridge, Louisiana."

"It's a perfect match," said Wayne Elliott, tour co-director and wooden boat enthusiast. "From the time Cajuns settled the swamps and bayous of South Louisiana, boats were a necessity for trapping, hunting and fishing for subsistence. Water is everywhere, and the deep boat culture reflects that. Historically boats were made out of old growth cypress trees that were thousands of years old. Today the materials have changed, but the same DNA is still there."

The Cajun Classique cruise down the oak-tree laden Bayou Teche will go over 100 miles of Cajun beauty. Time out will be taken to experience the local culture including its indigenous music and food. The Bayou Teche's historic and cultural significance will be highlighted. A remnant of the Mississippi River's waters of 5,000 years ago, Bayou Teche welcomed the first Cajun settlements, has seen Civil War battles, and is home to Keystone, the oldest operating lock and dam structure in the Mississippi Delta area.
