Park Closures & Access Update
Through May 31, 2020

All classes, programs and special events have been cancelled or postponed through May 31, 2020. Park closures consist of Field Sports Park, Metcalf Motorcycle Park, Lexington Reservoir, dog parks, campgrounds, museums, visitor centers, group sites, yurts and playgrounds (Ed Levin, Martial Cottle Discovery Farm, Vasona and Hellyer).

Overcrowding of parking lots and trails can cause temporary closures. This is a fluid situation designed to control the amount of vehicles and visitors at any given time. Turnover can happen fairly quickly as park staff monitors the flow of attendance. Our goal is to keep as many Parks open as possible so people can continue to enjoy the trails in a safe and healthy manner while practicing social distancing. See our recommended social distancing hikes featuring road-width trails.

Low risk park activities including golf courses, archery ranges and disc golf courses have reopened. Thank you for continuing to abide by the new safety protocols to help keep these areas open. Below are the safety protocols for each activity.

Please note that Uvas County Park requires reservations for day use, 7-days a week (and holidays) through July 5, 2020. Trail use and parking requires a pre-booked ticket. Visit   http://gooutsideandplay.org   or call 408-355-2201 to make your reservation.

New Hiker to County Parks?
Here's What You Need to Know

Trail Planning
Select a trail based on your skill level and desired distance. With 28 County Parks and 350 miles of trail, there's plenty of terrain to choose from. Visit parkhere.org to print out trail maps or download maps to your mobile phone. Trail maps are also available at Park kiosks.

Before Leaving the House
  • Dress for the outdoors in loose breathable clothing. Wear comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots.
  • Apply plenty of sunscreen and wear a hat and sunglasses for added protection.
  • Pack a sufficient supply of water for yourself, other household members, and your dog. Drinking fountains are currently closed.
  • Pack a snack (trail mix, energy bars) for longer hikes.
  • Bring a whistle in case you get lost or need help; it's easier than yelling.
  • Bring your cell phone for taking pictures and emergency calls where reception is available.
  • Wear a mask or have one on your person at all times and readily available for use.
  • Inform others of where you are going and how long you expect to be gone.

Arriving at County Parks
  • Use trail heads signs and maps to stay on track.
  • Drink water before, during and after your hike to stay hydrated.
  • Do not disturb wildlife or plants.
  • Walk pets in approved areas only and keep them controlled on a 6' leash at all times.
  • Carry out garbage and pet waste.
  • Share the trail. Bikers and foot traffic yield to equestrians. Bikers must warn foot traffic with a sounding device or verbal warning before passing safely on the left.
  • Headphones or earbuds are acceptable, but lower the volume to be aware of your surroundings.
  • Restrooms are open and available for use.
