Retirement of Gilles Laurin  
At the end of the year, Gilles Laurin, CIAC’s longest serving staff member, is retiring after almost 33 years. Gilles is an incredibly dedicated member of CIAC and has ensured that all new members and staff truly understand the importance of Responsible Care and the ethic to “do the right thing and be seen to do the right thing.” His support for our members, partners and verifiers in their Responsible Care journeys is unmatched.

Plastics
Polystyvert awarded funding to scale-up recycling technology 
CIAC Plastics Division member Polystyvert recently announced they will recieve $3.5 million in funding from Sustainable Development Technology Canada - Technologies du Développement Durable Canada. Polystyvert will use the investment to complete the scale-up of its recycling technology to enable the full circular economy of polystyrene.
Transportation
CIAC re-establishes Transportation Incidents Measurement System  
Beginning with the 2021 reporting year, CIAC will re-establish collecting aggregate transportation incident data annually to fulfill reporting requirements to the International Council of Chemical Associations. Previously, CIAC collected data using the Transportation Incident Measurements System (TIMS) in both aggregate and detailed incident surveys.
Net Zero
Energy Innovation Program call for proposals on fuel switching 
Natural Resources Canada’s Office of Energy Research and Development (OERD) is calling for proposals on industrial fuel switching. The program will provide $50 million in funding over the next five years towards technologies that advance industrial fuel switching and the production of clean fuels for use in hard-to-abate sectors. It will also provide $3 million over the same period for projects that support the development of hydrogen-related codes and standards. The deadline for proposals is February 2, 2022.
