"Color Combos that Spark Attention! Part Three
"
Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!
As you saw in the last two BobBlasts - Part One - I did a demo painting of a color combination from my Goof-Proof Color Wheel. Part Two - I worked on a painting that I had already started - the Color Combination is based on Red-Yellow as the Dominant Color. You can see me reestablish the focal point (Blue) and add the two spice colors (Violet and Green).
In this BobBlast, I am pulling that same painting all together and finishing the painting - keeping it very loose. It is done when it matches the title - watch the video to see the title and the
steps to complete it!
My intention/concept is to make a painting that represents my vision of a vase of flowers, bathed in morning sunshine. More importantly, my goal is to also make a painting I've never done before.
My painting goals also include visually fun, light hearted and cheerful.
This is where imagination comes into play - I stare at this colorful mess for awhile until I can almost see an image of florals in a vase. First comes the
silhouette... I paint the vase with what is referred to as
reductive painting: getting rid of the parts that don't look like flowers in a vase. You might say it's like painting an image backwards. I prefer the negative shape or reductive painting because it is a lot of fun starting abstractly and crazy loose.
Using the right side of the brain - the creative side!
To start this reductive technique, I choose an opaque color in the dominant color family and paint the silhouette of the vase and flowers. Next, boldly establish the one big focal point flower and add the two spice colors sparingly around the focal point flower.
I keep it loose and quite abstract - stopping at 90% to allow the viewer to "finish" the painting in their own imagination.
I like to think that under every good painting is a good abstract painting!
As a general reminder: Before I begin a painting, I choose the four main colors for the entire painting from this color wheel. I don't have to guess what the combination should be! I have found, choosing the colors beforehand, I paint more confidently, loosely and not linger as long in specific areas.
Remember - Keep this formula in mind:
Dominant Color - 80%
Focal Point Color - 10%
Spice Color - 5%
Spice Color - 5%
This is just one way to make a painting. Have FUN with this exercise!
