BobBlast #216

Little Gems into Big Treasures

Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!

In this BobBlast I show you some fun exercises - Painting my Little Gems.
This is a short class at the upcoming  Trade Show - Artisan Expo in Santa Fe, New Mexico.  My final trade show of the year is the Art of the Carolinas in November . The links for both are below.

My practice paintings are 6.5"x9.5" - they are single subject paintings of pears, coffee cups, flowers in a vase ETC. I start off with a full sheet of watercolor paper - 22"x30" and divide the entire sheet into the same size images. I practice painting multiples of the same subject, over and over. I am experimenting and working out color combinations, practicing compositions and getting comfortable with the gesture of painting the same subject.

Then, I paint the same subject again - only this time I make it larger, up to 24" or even larger. This time I am not going for the sketch, but a finished painting.

What do I do with the small paint sketches? I mat and sell them at Open Studio, outdoor art festivals or gallery shows in display bins.

This series of Coffee Cup warm-ups became a book cover for an Italian Publishing Company!

To start - Precut all the pieces and tape back together. Or - simply mark off the full sheet with the same size painting, i.e. 5"x7", 6.5"x9.5", 8"x10" - all on one sheet.
Tone the full sheet with a mid-tone color - that is your dominant color. Next, brush in your darkest dark and lightest light - you're almost finished! Work on all the small pieces at the same time - one right after the other - move quickly and make your decisions intuitively. You are mass-producing the same painting. Don't try to make carbon copies - they are in a series, so they will be similar.

I focus on painting only Little Gems:
*Single Subject
*Series of the same Object
*Practice all the Time
*No Two Alike
*Repeat Over and Over...

After a short while, painting and brushing color around will become automatic!
