BobBlast #243

How Bob Prepares Six Pieces of Watercolor Paper for his
10x10 inch Practice Warmups

Welcome back to another BobBlast!

A standard sheet of watercolor paper measures approximately 22 inches by 30 inches. I use 300 lb Kilimanjaro from Cheap Joe's catalog.

Before tearing or cutting the paper to the size I want, I gesso one side with either Utrecht white acrylic Professional Gesso or - I pre-tone the entire sheet with Holbein's Orange Gesso (all acrylic - many colors available). Let the gesso dry.

On the opposite side of the paper, I make light pencil marks all over the surface -
so I know which side has been gessoed. (Not necessarily on the orange sheets...)

On the back, I measure along the top and make a mark every 10 inches - I repeat this step down the side of the paper - every 10 inches. Draw a straight line to each top-to-bottom and side-to-side. The resultant grid will yield two rows of three 10x10 inch practice warmup paintings... and a 2 inch scrap.

To cut - next I use a metal straight edge ruler and a box cutter blade and I cut along the lines. If you prefer a deckled edge in lieu of a straight cut, try cutting only halfway through from the back and then tear. The front side of the watercolor paper will have a deckled edge. Watch the demonstration on the video. It's fun and easy!

Be prepared! Prep several so you will always be ready!
