BobBlast #290
"Me and My Shadow"
Welcome back to another BobBlast!
Shadows h
elp to visually anchor objects.
Artist Sketchbook Page - Looking at and Practicing Shadows
Practice drawing and painting shadows emerging from underneath objects. Also, by including a shadow, it reveals where your light source is coming from. It helps to anchor your subjects. The page above is from my sketchbook practicing and observing shadows. For realistic paintings, I include shadows. For my abstracts, shadows are not included because there may not be a light source.
And what color is the shadow? Generally, the color may be the complementary color of the light source. Paint a snow scene on a sunny day and the shadows on the snow will be bluish (orange sun, blue shadow).
Watch the demo to see an easy way to get started and a simplified approach to painting convincing shadows. For a realistic image, anchor the subject or object on top of the shadow.
In the painting part of the demo, I establish the direction of the light source to
also create dimension. You will hear me say
"Dark Against Light, Dark Against Light"
over and over again. Incorporating a light source in your paintings will give focus, shape, dimension and a point of interest! Once you figure out where your light source is coming from, you will know where to place the shadow.
Summary Notes:
1. Practice drawing and painting shadows.
2. Set object on top of its shadow.
3. Shadow emerges from underneath the object.
4. Shadow goes away from the light source.
5. Shadows work best with realism; no need for shadows with abstract.
Now, get out of your studio - go outside and look at shadows!
Thanks again for watching and telling your friends! All my BobBlasts are archived on my website and my YouTube Channel. We post new studio tips weekly that offer real content, substance and useful techniques that work for me. And they're free! We appreciate your interest, questions, comments and support!
Some of our subscribers have asked about the "behind the scenes" people who make the weekly BobBlast possible - so we want to give a shout out and thank Bo von Hohenlohe for editing the BobBlast videos. Bo also produces websites and helps authors self-publish book. Please visit his website at www.bvhprods.com.
Below is a list of featured workshops - but did you know that I also offer private sessions in my studio? Perfect for beginners who want a crash course in watercolor or acrylic or for artists who are designing an exhibit and want to bounce ideas for content and techniques. I devote 100% of my studio time to you! Designed for 1 to 3 people - if you are interested or have questions, email kate@robertburridge.com
Here's a quick reminder and some upcoming workshops and dates.
