Diversity Workshop Plus a Demo!

Welcome back to  another BobBlast.

In this week's BobBlast, we are starting off in my studio during a Mentor Workshop Retreat!

In this workshop, I act as a mentor, rather than a "workshop instructor." There are eight painters - eight very diversified voices and painting styles - In the video, you will see various themes and well-thought-out series of paintings.

The Mentor Retreats are fun and highly productive - lots of painting, good networking and camaraderie! At the end of the video, wait for the credits and then Google the artists!

In prepping for attending a workshop like my Studio Mentor Workshop Retreat, it will help if you do the following:
  1. Have a plan. Decide what you are going to paint. Have a goal.
  2. Bring the materials you are planning to work with.
  3. Clear your calendar so you will not have distractions that will keep you from doing your work.
During the Mentor Retreats, I do many demonstrations of techniques and materials - the following is my "super loose beginning, painting a dark river bank" - yes really!

You can watch me demonstrate the following steps:

On pre-gessoed paper, wipe very wet pigments of black, magenta and violet all over the surface - being careful to not scrub the colors into the surface.

While still wet, I use my fingernail to scribe into the wet paint - my version of narrow tree trunks, giving an immediate indication of trees along the riverbank.

This is how I begin. Loose, abstract and LOTS of wet pigment.

The first stage already has a swamp-ish atmosphere. Paint quickly and don't over think.

Don't over think!

Keep your brushes wet!

Thanks again for watching and telling your friends! We strive for short, substantial, informative bits to help jumpstart your time in your studio.
