Bobcat E-Envelope

October 27, 2022

Hi SPS Families,

I hope everyone is having a good week and it has been great to see the kids and staff take part in the "Red Ribbon Week" out-of-uniform days!

We have our rescheduled lockdown drill tomorrow in the school building. Teachers have gone over procedures and expectations with the kids and I know they will do a great job tomorrow when the Hickory Hills Police Department is here to assist in the drill.

Please remember that all Spiritwear orders are due by this Sunday, October 30th.  Orders can be placed online and will be delivered to the school.  See below for the link!

I am making a schedule change that I want you to be aware of and to help you plan ahead: Tuesday, November 22nd, was originally scheduled to be a half day of school and also parent/teacher conferences. I am making that a full-day off of school for the students in order to add a morning time slot for conferences. There are also several changes to the structure of parent/teacher conferences and it will be all explained to you in a letter going home on Monday.

We hope to see everyone at our Halloween Trunk-or-Treat event on Saturday! There has been a great group of people "behind-the-scenes" organizing the event and the event would not be made possible without their help and guidance! Not only will we have our trunk-or-treat event, we will also have a "haunted hallway" in the school and then two short movies that will be projected on an inflatable projector outside in the parking lot. The weather looks like it is going to cooperate as well! The event starts at 6:30 pm.

With Halloween on Monday, we mentioned to the kids that they can wear facepaint/makeup to school on Monday, if they have a mask they can bring it for pictures, but won't be wearing them the whole day, and to leave any "accessories" that come with the costumes at home. I am looking forward to experiencing Halloween once again at SPS!

Next Tuesday, November 1st, is a 1:30 dismissal for the students. The teachers and I will be meeting after that to discuss I-Ready and our Continuous School Improvement Plan.

As always, if you need anything, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thanks

Dear Parishioners,

This week I offer you a little reflection on the Sunday Liturgy. Sunday can be a wonderful break from the “rate race” of daily life!

Liturgy is “the participation of the People of God” in “the work of God.” It is the “exercise of the priestly office of Jesus” in which God is worshiped and adored and people are made holy. God begins the work of sanctifying people in time and space and brings that work to completion. Those who respond to God in worship and service are given the privilege of becoming co-workers in the divine plan. (We are co-workers in God’s plan!)...

In the Classroom

In Mrs. Scheckel's Art Class our PreK students have been busy working on spooky projects this month!  The children created a Frankenstein paper craft and watercolor Monsters.  Excellent job PreK, we love seeing your creativity!

STEM Challenges

In Mrs. K's Technology class the 6th, 7th, and 8th graders had a STEM Challenge called "Boat Building" and Buoyancy. Any object will float when the buoyant force is large enough to counter the object's weight. So a large hollow object might float because large means more water displaced. We also researched Archimedes' Principle for more information on this topic.

The teams were given a 12" x 12" piece of aluminum foil and told to mold/shape their "boat" however they thought would best float and hold the most coins. The challenge was to have their "boat" float as they added coins to it for weight. The winner would have the most coins in their boat.  This challenge focused on developing critical thinking, teamwork, design, analysis, and innovation.

The 4th and 5th Graders learned about the importance of a strong foundation for any structure. Foundation design is the creation of a construction plan for a building foundation primarily; however, in our classroom it was the base for our book stack challenge. The students were taught that the main role of any foundation is to structurally support the building or items by transferring the load of the building or items onto the foundation.

The students were given 5 sheets of copier paper and some tape. They had to create the foundation that would hold the books as they were stacked up on top of each other. Awesome job utilizing Teamwork, Design, and Critical Thinking!
