Volume 23. Issue 7. July 2022
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Susan Dollar

(Susan has been on vacation for three weeks and just got back on July 7, so she will not be writing a complete column until August.)

This is who we were...and who we can be again:

There comes a time
When we heed a certain call
When the world must come together as one
There are people dying
Oh, and it's time to lend a hand to life
The greatest gift of all
We can't go on
Pretending day-by-day
That someone, somewhere soon make a change
We're all a part of God's great big family
And the truth, you know, love is all we need

We are the world
We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day, so let's start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day, just you and me
Oh, send them your heart
So they know that someone cares
And their lives will be stronger and free
As God has shown us by turning stones to bread
And so we all must lend a helping hand

We are the world
We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day, so let's start giving
Oh, there's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day, just you and me
When you're down and out, there seems no hope at all
But if you just believe there's no way we can fall
Well, well, well, well let us realize
Oh, that a change can only come
When we stand together as one
NOTE: WE WILL NOT MEET IN JULY
Even though we aren't meeting in July,
you can still do these things!
When schools reopen this August, the Center for Refugee Services wants the children to be ready! They are requesting school supplies and filled backpacks for pre-K through grade 12 students.

Please drop off your donations (preferably before August 3) at the office between 11-2, Monday-Friday, or bring them to our August 11 BAD meeting. Jessica Veilleux will deliver them to CRS.

Volunteers are also invited to pack:
Saturday and Sunday (August 6 & 7) 2-6 pm
Monday and Tuesday (August 8 & 9)

Volunteers also needed for distribution:
Wednesday-Friday 10 - 3

Schedule a volunteer slot here:

A sincere thank you to the 30 recurring donors that we currenly have - we appreciate your support!
BECOME A RECURRING DONOR!
We still need more recurring donors! Remember that we are trying to avoid the expense and effort of hosting a fall gala so please consider setting up a monthly donation to BAD.

Just $5 a month will help! Think of it as giving up a cup of coffee at Starbucks in the name of democracy!

The easist way to donate is via ActBlue; simply click on the ActBlue logo on the left and enter your donation information. You can also donate via a credit card, an auto-withdrawal from your bank, or by mailing a check. We also love one-time donations!

With the November election only 4 months away, we need to continue to support candidates and causes , so please become a recurring donor.
It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to Stacey Gilfillan and her husband, Chris. They are moving back to Massachusetts and are looking forward to being closer to some of their family (and being in a blue state!).

Stacey was our 2021 BAD president and coordinator for our Saturday Night Supper Club. Thank you, Stacey, for your dedication and service to our organization. We'll miss you!

LAURA BRAY
Kendall County Democratic Party Chair

It has been a tough few weeks in the news. I hope you are all finding ways to grieve, to process your anger, maybe even to take a step back to regain your equilibrium.

As with most of you, I’m still reeling from the SCOTUS decision a couple of weeks ago. I wanted to write about it in that next week’s Progressive Views column in the Boerne Star, but the editor wouldn’t print even a hint or oblique reference to abortion. It’s only the most consequential SCOTUS decision of our lifetime, and they choose to ignore the elephant in the room. You can read the column I really wanted to write on our website here: https://kendalltxdemocrats.org/progressive-views-turning-your-anguish-into-action-the-column-i-really-wanted-to-write/

From that column: “The Republicans bend over backward to make it hard to vote in Texas, so you’ll give up and not bother. That’s EXACTLY the result they’re after: they want you to give up so they win by default. Because they know they can’t win if everyone can vote; nor can they win based on the “merits” of their positions (of which there are none).”

I adore the meme below from John Pavlovitz. The “other side” is so loud and obnoxious that it’s easy for them to take up *way* more room in your head than they ought to. Take heart! TAMOUTYT.

Seven of us will travel to Dallas next week for the Texas Democratic Convention. We’re all very excited, and we’ll have lots to report when we return.

I hope you can join us for our next Adopt-A-Highway event on Saturday, July 23, 9:00am. We’ll start early, pick up for about an hour, and call it a day, since it’s likely to be hot. Sign up here: https://www.mobilize.us/kendalltxdems/event/471662/

Thanks for everything you do to Turn Texas Blue!

Adopt-A-Highway
Saturday, July 23
9:00am.

We’ll start early, pick up for about an hour, and call it a day, since it’s likely to be hot.
Remember: many hands make light work!

PLAN AHEAD FOR
SEPTEMBER MARKET DAYS!
We will be participating in the September 10-11 Market Days and will need lots of volunteers to assist with the booth. September is always one of the biggest weekends for the market and tons of people will be there.

This is prime time going into the campaign season. We will have candidate collateral, merchandise, t-shirts, and voter registration cards, so it will take a lot of volunteers to man the booth. A sign-up email will be sent out in August.
Just a reminder: there are always interesting and informative posts on our social media pages so be sure to check them out - and Like them!
