THE VOICE
Volume 27 . Issue 5 . May 2025

WHITNEY WHITE
President
Speak up! Stand up! Show up!...Still
While 47 signed nearly 150 Executive Orders in the first 100 days of this administration, at least 220 lawsuits have been filed in response. Conservative and liberal judges across the country have ruled against the administration. The ACLU has sought and won some sort of emergency relief in about half of its filed cases. For now, at least, the courts are mostly holding against the authoritarian power grab we are witnessing. Still, when you have an administration who openly defies the courts, what does that mean for our democracy?
Voices continue to rise across the country. While we are all trying to keep our heads above water as we watch the destruction of government institutions and the economy, I am struck by the growing resistance through peaceful protest. Starting in early April, Hands Off protests in more than 1,200 locations in all 50 states experienced participation far exceeding the anticipated numbers of 500,000 with estimates in the millions. At the same time, people across the globe supported these US protests with marches in cities like London, Paris, Frankfurt, Brussels and others. Protests have continued across the country with two recent protests right here on Main Street in Boerne. At each event, there were new faces and growing participation.
Meanwhile, I've been looking for our government representatives to fight back. Mostly, their response has appeared slow and tepid. I knew that fight wasn't going to be violent, but I wanted it to be loud, and I wanted them to meet the opposition where they live. I was ready for the "we go high" responses to get down in the mud, so I appreciate the voices who are pushing back and pushing back hard (AOC, Bernie, Jasmine, and Casar). I also appreciate seeing Democrats doing what we do best, showing up for all Americans. Democrats holding town halls in red districts when they're own elected officials will not is who we are as a party - a party for all of the people. Last month's alternative townhall, dubbed The People's Townhall, in Fredericksburg did just that. The standing room only event sponsored by the Democratic Parties of Kendall, Gillespie, Kerr, and Blanco counties featured US. Representative Julian Castro, State Representative Vikki Goodwin State Representative Gene Wu and newly elected Texas Democratic Party chair Kendall Scudder. The event showcased our ability to coordinate and make our voices heard.
Notably, Senator Cory Booker protested last month by delivering the longest filibuster speech in U.S. Senate history, lasting 25 hours and five minutes. Rather than spewing hate and division back at the administration, Senator Booker reminded Americans who we are and what we fight for. As a bonus he broke the previous record for longest filibuster which was given by a segregationist and staunch opponent of civil rights, which seems only right.
Keep up the fight by speaking up, standing up and showing up! As one Hands Off protest participant shared, "We need to form community to bolster each other up because we have to be in this for the long run."

SIGN UP FOR THE BAD
RAPID RESPONSE TEAM
Though not an election year, there remain urgent and important legislative issues at the local, state and federal level requiring our attention. Thanks to long-time BAD member Cindy Offutt, we are implementing a RAPID RESPONSE TEAM to contact our elected officials as critical issues and votes arise.
We are asking all interested BAD members to sign up to receive texts and/or emails from Cindy. As urgent matters come up in Austin or Washington DC, Cindy will send out a brief recommendation on how to proceed.
When you receive an alert from Cindy, follow her directions to send out your own texts or emails, go online and sign petitions, or make phone calls.
Everyone can do this!
If you would like to join this effort, please send your name, email address and cell number to fcoffutt@yahoo.com. There is strength in numbers, so the more we can hammer our legislators, the more likely things may change.
BAD RAPID RESPONSE TEAM
Comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable!
Please note: We will not release or share your email or cell phone number with anyone.
This is a strictly voluntary, opt-in effort. You can opt-out at any time.

LAURA BRAY
KCDP CHAIR
NOTES FROM THE CHAIR
Are you a current Precinct Chair? Or would you like to know more about what the job entails? Or more about VAN, our voter database? Here’s your chance!
Join us for our Precinct Chair/VAN Training on Saturday, May 17, from 10:30am-3:15pm (light lunch provided) at the Blanco Public Library Community Room. Training will be provided by Kay Parr, Chair of the Texas Democratic Chairs Committee. Sponsored by the Democratic Parties of Kendall, Blanco, Kerr, and Gillespie. Limited seating. RSVP to chair@kendalltxdemocrats.org
Measles, once nearly eradicated, is making a deadly comeback—driven by Republican lies and vaccine misinformation. Their blatant disregard for public health is putting children at risk and spreading a dangerous virus across the country.
Experts in the state are now saying that Texas Republicans' failure to respond to the still-growing measles epidemic puts our state at “risk of threatening global stability.” Why won’t our GOP leaders throw their endorsement behind a statewide vaccination campaign?
As this is going on, the CDC has laid off hundreds of workers – including many of the scientists tasked with helping state and local officials contain outbreaks like this one. Vaccines save lives, and disinformation puts lives at risk. Instead of keeping their constituents informed on how to keep themselves and their families safe from this outbreak, Texas Republicans are – again – playing political games on vaccines.
Contact your representatives at the state and federal level to let them know how you feel.
We’re still looking for volunteers to fill these key roles:
- Precinct Chair/Deputy Chairs for Precincts 1030, 2080, 3010, 3040, 4050, 4090, and 4100
- Office Staff
- Publicity/PR
- Videographer
- Fundraising Chair
- Historian
- Event Coordinator
- Writer for Progressive Views columns
- Social Media Committee Member
- Election Workers
- Start/Administer a Kendall County Chapter of Indivisible
If interested, contact Chair Laura Bray (chair@kendalltxdemocrats.org) or Deputy Chair Karen Cox (deputychair@kendalltxdemocrats.org)

THE PEOPLE'S TOWN HALL
There was a packed house in Fredericksburg for the alternative People's Town Hall on Sunday, April 13, at the Gillespie County Historical Society Center. Our Republican reps won’t hold Town Halls, so prominent Democrats from the Texas and U.S. Legislatures attended. Present were U.S. Congressman Joaquin Castro, Kendall Scudder, the newly elected Chair of the Texas Democratic Party, Texas House Representative Vicki Goodwin, and Representative Gene Wu, the Texas House Minority Leader. The event was sponsored by the County Democratic Parties of Kendall, Gillespie, Kerr, and Blanco.

MAY DAY PROTEST
We had a GREAT crowd of over 120 and LOTS of new faces at the Boerne May Day Protest on May 1! At least six counties were represented (Kendall, Bexar, Medina, Bandera, Comal, and McCulloch). People brought clever signs to the sidewalk in front of City Hall and waved at the passing cars. We got a few thumbs-down and “one-fingered salutes,” but mostly, we heard lots of supportive honks and saw lots of waves and thumbs-up. Peg thoughtfully brought cold water and got more sign-ups for our newsletter. The Boerne Police had an officer in his squad car stationed directly across Main St from our protest, and we had no incidents.

"Celebration of the Suffragists"
was presented by Jill Torbert and Jan Olsen of the League of Women Voters on Wednesday, April 30. Enthusiastic attendees learned about not only the more well-known leaders of the movement (Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, Lucy Stone, Frances Ellen Watkins, Carrie Chapman Catt, Alice Paul and others), but also about women like Sojourner Truth, Maria Guadalupe Evangelina de Lopez, Texas native Jovita Idar, Inez Milholland, Ida B. Wells and Zitkala-Sa.
