THE VOICE

Volume 28 . Issue 5 . May 2026

SUSAN DOLLAR

President

What crazy times we live in. The onslaught continues...the incredible corruption by President Trump and his family. The absolute cruelty of ICE agents and their detention centers. The complete chaos that surrounds all of the Trump administraton. The loss of our allies around the world and deaths of our military service personnel. The outright attack on voting rights. And there's the ultimate challenge for all families: the unaffordability of almost everything.

I could go on and on but I know you are aware of what's happening in the world. One of the most important things we can do to counter this chaos is to VOTE. There's a Primary Run-off Election coming up next week and you may be surprised to see these past data from Kendall County:

  • In the 2020 Primary Run-off, only 9.38% of the 32,134 voters bothered to vote (unfortunately, the stats are not broken down by party).

  • In the 2022 Primary Run-off, a whopping 21.38% of the 35,391 voted.

  • And in 2024, in the Primary Run-off (it was only between Republicans; no Democrats were in the run-off), only 3.2% of the 38,031 voters turned out.

  • There are now 39,856 registerd voters in Kendall County.

It's critical that Democrats turn out in in full force to vote for the Dems that are in the run-off next week:

  • Lt. Governor: Vikki Goodwin and Marcos Velaz; the winner will face Republican Dan Patrick in November.

  • Attorney General: Joe Jaworski and Nathan Johnson; the winner will face the Republican winner of the Mayes Middleton/Chip Roy run-off in November.

Just keep the faith!

As Gina Hinojosa has pointed out:

This past weekend, voters across the state showed what it looks like to fight back at the ballot box. From city halls to school boards, Texans rejected the GOP’s chaos and corruption and chose leaders who will actually show up and do the work.

  • In Pearland, Quentin Wiltz was elected mayor in a Republican stronghold.
  • In Arlington, Brittney Garcia-Dumas flipped a city council seat in the 5th district.
  • In Denton, Jordan Villarreal won a city council seat in the 1st district, and Anita Martinez-Strickland won a seat on the Denton ISD Board of Trustees.
  • In Grapevine, Matthew White, Lindsey Sheguit, and Darrell Brown ousted GOP-aligned incumbents on the Grapevine-Colleyville Independent School District Board.
  • In San Antonio, Michael Adam Wulczyn and Caprice Garcia flipped two seats on the North East ISD Board of Trustees.
  • In Travis County, Tiffany Bennett and Natalie Nugent flipped two seats on the Lake Travis ISD Board of Trustees.

These races are all telling us something we’ve been hearing on the campaign trail: Texans are tired of leaders who serve their donors first and us second. They want strong public schools and community leaders who work for them. So, if anyone tells you change can’t happen in Texas, point them to what happened this weekend — change is already happening.

It's heartening to know that Democrats are showing surprising strength in special elections and off-year contests across the country, winning races in unexpected places and significantly narrowing the gap, even when they fall short. The gains Democrats have made this spring reinforced a picture that’s becoming increasingly clear — while Donald Trump still dominates the Republican Party, Democrats seem to have the momentum ahead of November’s midterm elections. So encourage your friends, family and neighbors to get out and vote next week!

NOTE: THERE IS

NO MAY BAD MEETING

NEXT BAD MEETING:

June 11, 2026

Our guest speaker will be Vikki Goodwin, who unfortunately had to cancel her April visit at the last minute. We look forward to hearing from our next Lt. Governor!

Note that the June meeting is an evening meeting.

As always, arrive early if you plan to eat.

We are thrilled to announce our 2026 scholarship winner:

CAYLEE LOPEZ!

Caylee has been accepted into Texas A&M University where she will study Environmental Engineering.  Her understanding of environmental challenges and her determination to help address them greatly impressed the scholarship committee.  She also demonstrated several skills that will ensure her success in college: leadership, determination, focus, and a good sense of humor.  She has been an officer in several clubs,  carrying this extra responsibility while maintaining excellent grades.  Perhaps most important to the scholarship committee was Caylee's ability to respond to unexpected questions, quickly processing new information and rethinking her positions "on the fly."  College will challenge her to examine previous beliefs and integrate new information with her existing values, and we believe she clearly demonstrated that she is ready for this challenge. Congratulations, Caylee!

Thank you to our scholarship committee members: Nina Zemel, Linda Schott, and Brenda Schmidt.

Song of the Month:

A LOT TO DRINK ABOUT

Jimmy Buffett (2009)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGbrCJfgH8s

Hey, have you noticed that the world has changed

That the news is all bad

Well, I think it's time for a song about that

Up on the East side of Manhattan,

They're still dancing with the stars.

While over in sub prime city,

It's getting ugly in the local bars

Watching the news only gives me the blues

There's too much going wrong.

It takes the likes of me to hit the reboot key

And write a high speed drinking song.

Millionaires losing everything.

Hey, welcome to the other side of life!

There goes the yacht, there goes the Rolls,

But you, you get to keep your wife!

And don't forget the automakers

Swimming up stream like a trout.

They let the shit hit the fan

And then they made a plan

We've got a, a lot to drink about.

There's the price of oil,

The war of the spoils.

Here's your bucket for the big bailout!

Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan,

We've got a, a lot to drink about.

Now, Madoff made off with all the money.

And his clients are down to skunk weed.

Repeat after me, it's so easy to see

We're only talking simple greed.

And those Somalian pirates are counting all the gold.

While Bush and Cheney ain't around

And all the good lookers seem to be Russian hookers

From Key West to London town.

With the price of oil,

The war of the spoils.

Here's your bucket for the big bailout?

Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan,

We've got a, a lot to drink about.

So pour me some Tennessee whiskey,

Pour me a fine Jamaican rum.

That loud mouth soup

Can get ya kinda looped

Tequila, of course I'll have some!

Well the family devalues

And little children plan their net worth

And the truth wherever it's hiding,

Can be found on Google Earth.

Citibank's buying jets with our money.

I wanna flog 'em with a buggy whip.

Let's hope Obama and Joe won't let the volcano blow

And patch the hole in our sinking ship.

There's the price of oil,

The war of the spoils.

Here's your bucket for the big bailout!

Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan,

We've got a, a lot to drink about.

Recession, oppression, depression, good God

CNN keeps bumming me out.

I can't take another doomsday minute

We got a lot to drink, a lot to think,

A lot to drink about.

God bless America!
