NOTES FROM THE CHAIR

Recently, some stories have appeared about structural changes within the Texas Democratic Party (TDP).

Texas Tribune story & Progress Texas podcast (featuring an interview with TDP Chair Scudder)

A day after the story broke, I spoke with TDP Chair Kendall Scudder at a seminar in Austin. He said that the Tribune story had some “misrepresentations” and “wasn’t entirely accurate.” Note in the Tribune story that the reorganization was approved by the TDP governing committee a couple of weeks prior.

In the Progress Texas podcast, Kendall said, “The political class is upset that we as a party are doing things differently. We’ve gotten nothing from doing it the way we’ve been doing it for the last thirty years but failure.

In our meeting, he made it clear that this action is *not* that TDP is moving their HQ to Dallas and firing anyone who won’t relocate. Instead, he is moving some TDP functions out of Austin and into other areas. TDP will now have administrative offices in Dallas, Houston, and Austin. Eagle Pass and Amarillo will have organizing offices. This will distribute TDP functions more evenly across the state.

In my opinion, these are positive changes and can only help the party. I will keep you posted. Feel free to email me with questions/concerns.

Earlier in September, KCDP hosted the Chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) Ken Martin at a standing-room-only event at our office, and it was a runaway success!! (See photos.) Chair Martin, the DNC staff, and the TDP staff seemed pleased, we had lots of great refreshments (provided by TDP), and standing room only (50-60 people) to hear DNC Chair Ken Martin speak to our group. I’ve had lots of fabulous feedback.

The Martin quote that stuck out the most to me: “When we organize everywhere, we can win anywhere.” He spoke of providing more financial support to state parties (which will help us, in the long run), and spoke to the need to listen to *all* voices within the Party, even if that person disagrees with you on a specific point of policy. At one point, he mentioned that only 45% of precinct chair positions are filled (this is a Texas-wide stat); I quickly got out my calculator and was proud to state “65%!” for Kendall County. 😊 He seemed quite pleased.

Since Trump took office, there have been 43 elections and Democrats have been “over-performing” in all. Some we won, some we lost, but Democrats over-performed in these races by an average of 16%.

Everyone seemed receptive to what Martin was saying; now we need to see if the deeds match the words.

On Thursday, September 11, Kendall County Democratic Chair Laura Bray was host to a special event that was a runaway success!!

Democratic National Party Chair Ken Martin (pictured on left) came to Boerne! He brought his staff and also in attendance were Kendall Scudder, the Texas Democratic Party Chair (pictured on right), and his staff. There were lots of great refreshments (provided by TDP), and standing room only (50-60 people) to hear Chair Martin speak to the group.

In addition to DNC and TDP personnel, there were also the County Chairs of Bexar (Michelle Lowe Solis), Comal (Vicki Locke), Gillespie (Cathy Collier), Kerr (Lynette Wedig), and Blanco (Maggie Coleman). Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar also attended.

Many thanks to Laura for bringing Kendall County into the national spotlight!

A large crowd showed up for the September 11 BAD meeting. We heard a very informative program from Americans United for Separation of Church and State.

Democrats hosted a “Community Conversations and Action Evening" at the office on Saturday, September 27. It was a huge success! Lots of fun, and great speakers, including former Representative Charlie Gonzalez. There were also booths for kids, a caricature artist, other community groups, even a cake walk!

Many thanks to Linda Guajardo for organizing and spearheading the event!

More Dem activities!

Kendall County Dems participated in the Domestic Violence Awareness Walk on October 4 in Boerne.

FYI - Intimate partner violence affects more than 12 million people each year. 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men aged 18 and older in the US have experienced physical violence by an intimate partner.

Suanne Pyle (left) and Jane Brown (right) met "soon-to-be-candidate-for-something" Ron Nirenberg (center) at a recent event in Bexar County. Jane said, "I was geeking out!"
