WHITNEY WHITE
President
Before the election last year when I was considering whether I would take on becoming president of BAD, people said, "It's a non-election year - there won't be much to it." But the 2024 election result shocked us all and the work of BAD is more important now than ever. Likewise, your support of BAD is more important now than ever, including your membership dues.
In addition to candidate and local organization donations, your dues help cover BAD's operating costs including the following:
- Monthly office rent
- BAD annual $1,500 scholarship
- Publicity in local newspapers and Boerne Newcomers guide
- Website hosting for webpage and domain name
- Online volunteer registration/sig-up program
- Web-based newsletter
Like so many things, these costs continue to rise, making your ongoing support essential to the work of BAD. With the 2026 mid-terms fast approaching, candidate support both locally and nationally will be extremely important. Please continue to Speak Up, Stand Up and Show Up, and pay your BAD membership dues.
Thank you!

UPDATE FROM THE CENTER FOR REFUGEE SERVICES
Save the Date for the Big Give!
The Center for Refugee Services will participate in the 12th annual Big Give San Antonio. This year's Big Give will be on September 17 and 18.
As recipients of Najim Charitable Foundation funding, CRS is eligible to participate in the "Match Minutes" on 9/17 from 11:12-11:17AM.
Impact of H.R.1 on Our Clients
Many people have questions about how H.R.1, the "one big, beautiful bill," will affect our clients. Welcome.US has published on their website an explanation on how this new law will affect refugees, along with information about when these changes will take effect.
In short, the new law means that legally resettled refugees and lawfully present immigrants will have significantly reduced access to health care and public assistance, face steep new fees for asylum and protection, and are subject to heightened immigration enforcement infrastructure and policies.
As a result, communities already in resettlement programs may see diminished support, increased financial hardship, and greater vulnerability—even though they arrived legally and fled dire circumstances. For more detailed information and analysis, please visit the Welcome.US website.

LAURA BRAY
Kendall County Democratic Party Chair
NOTES FROM THE CHAIR
Last week, the President stated that his “most likely next targets” for sending troops into cities to “fight crime” were Chicago and New York. In response, on Monday, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker gave a blistering speech at a press conference in Chicago condemning the action. His words were so eloquent and so right-on-the-mark that I wanted to share the full speech. The video is definitely worth 15 minutes of your time. [link: #
September 9 is the first day precinct chairs can file for the 2026–2028 term. If you’ve ever considered becoming a Precinct Chair, now’s your chance! I’m happy to answer any questions you have about the job. Sitting Precinct Chairs: you will need to fill out the application and get it notarized (the Boerne Library has a free notary service). There is no filing fee. I will need your completed application by December 8.
We also need a range of other volunteers. Click here to see the opportunities. I’m beginning to take a step back from my County Chair duties to focus on other projects, and I and really need to find someone to “shadow” me for the next few months so that someone can take over. I’m happy to discuss the details; just call or email.
Keep dialing/emailing your representatives!

From Joyce Vance:
In order to resist what Trump is doing in our country, you need to be informed; you need to know what’s at stake. Even in a week like this one, when it’s gut-wrenching to try and take in what the Trump administration is doing, it’s our duty to witness it, to share what we learn with others, to resist, to refuse to give up. We’ll keep doing that. We are not fighting the fight to preserve democracy alone; we are doing it in the company of other patriots—true patriots, not fake ones. Every small step we take counts. Some weeks are going to be difficult and full of bad news, but other weeks, if we persevere, will be ones where we make progress. Don’t give up.
In times like these, knowledge truly is power. Subscribe to Civil Discourse and get clear, reliable insight into the law and politics shaping our future—so you’re not in the dark when it matters the most.
We’re in this together.

Trump is ramping up his attacks on our rights and democracy, but we’re not backing down. On October 18, we’re taking to the streets in more cities and in larger numbers to remind Trump, his cronies, and those on the sidelines looking for hope: America has no kings.
The No Kings Coalition is calling for another nationwide day of action
next month, part of a growing movement that has already drawn
millions into the streets.
SAVE THE DATE:
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 18
More information to follow soon!
A core principle behind all No Kings events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values and to act lawfully at these events. Weapons of any kind, including those legally permitted, should not be brought to events.
