Administrative Appointments

Boise, ID -- 04/14/2023 -- Boise School District is pleased to announce the following administrative appointments, effective July 1, 2023.

Dr. Fernanda Brendefur - Principal, Horizon Elementary School

Dr. Fernanda Brendefur has 13 years of teaching experience and 14 years of administrative experience, including currently serving as Principal at Whittier Elementary School (2015 to present). In addition, she served as a Federal Programs Consultant for the Boise District. Principal Brendefur is committed to the District’s student-centered learning approach, which establishes a positive and responsive school culture that serves the needs of all students. She believes each and every student can be successful in learning when provided the adequate resources, support and guidance. She has demonstrated experience in seeing that all students have opportunities to succeed academically and socially.

Dr. Brendefur Is a strong instructional leader who helps support the work of the District’s well qualified and highly motivated educators and support staff members. She has used her Spanish fluency to improve educational offerings to the elementary school students and families that she serves.

Dr. Brendefur's instructional leadership style is shaped by a multicultural framework, which she is committed to using to lead a school culture and educational program that is conducive to successful student learning. Her priorities are focused on providing emotional and physical safety for all students and staff, making data-informed decisions, capitalizing on teachers' strengths and empowering them as leaders and providing support and resources that improve instruction.

Principal Brendefur earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Comparative Literature and Spanish from the University of California, Irvine; Master of Arts Degree in Curriculum and Instruction (Bilingual/ENL Education) from Boise State University; Doctorate Degree in Education (Curriculum and Instruction - Bilingual/ESL/Multicultural Education) from Boise State University; and Educational Specialist Degree (Educational Leadership) from the University of Idaho.

Charlene Gimlin, Principal, Valley View Elementary School

Charlene Gimlin has served students since 1995. During that time she has worked as a teacher at The Children’s School in Boise, in the Clark County School District in Las Vegas, NV, and an educator and administrator in the Boise School District. She currently serves as Assistant Principal at Les Bois Junior High School (2022-23). Previously, she worked as an Assistant Principal at Capital High School (2014 to 2022). She also taught physical education, health and AVID at West Junior High and Riverglen Junior High.

She is a strong instructional leader who is committed to the District’s student-centered instructional model that focuses on providing each student with the support, resources and guidance to see that successful learning takes place each school day.

Ms. Gimlin has demonstrated experience in creating a positive and responsive school culture that supports students and families. She believes in strong school-community relations and is committed to the District’s Strategic Plan and the Vision that every child can learn and succeed in college, career and citizenship.

She believes that the most important contributor to students' success is the relational capacity students have with the adults in the building. She will work hard to support a strong culture that supports students' social and emotional well being at Valley View Elementary School.

She has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education and a Master of Arts Degree in Special Education from Boise State University. Additionally, she has a Specialists Degree from the University of Idaho in School Leadership.

Regina Hoffman-Flock - Principal, Whittier Elementary School

Regina Hoffman-Flock has more than 24-years of teaching and leadership experience. She currently serves as Assistant Principal, Whittier Elementary School & Supporting Madison Early Childhood Education Center (2022 to present).

She also served as:

Special Education Resource Room Teacher (Shadow Hills Elementary, 2013-2022);
Reading Specialist (Koelsch Elementary, 2008-2012;
Mountain View Elementary, 2008-2012);
EXCEL Teacher (Mountain View Elementary, 2006-2008, Amity Elementary, 2000-2004);
Principal Intern (Maple Grove & Horizon elementaries, 2004-2006); and
Staff Trainer/Behavior Interventionist (1998-2000)

In addition, for nearly a decade (2013-2022), she served as the Administrative Designee at Shadow Hills Elementary School, Chair of Shadow Hill’s Special Education Team and a member of Shadow Hills’ Leadership Team and Positive Behavior Intervention & Support Team.

Mrs. Hoffman-Flock is a compassionate, positive collaborative instructional leader who creates an environment where students and educators love to teach and learn and support each other along the way. She believes in and supports the District’s Student-Centered Learning System, which provides with the opportunities, resources, support and guidance for each student to successfully learn and grow.

Mrs. Hoffman-Flock earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Secondary Education from Lewis-Clark State College; a Master of Arts Degree in Special Education from Boise State University; and an Educational Specialist Administrative degree from the University of Idaho.

Trevor McKenna - Principal, Riverglen Junior High School

Trevor McKenna has served students in Idaho since 2008. He currently serves as Assistant Principal at Borah High School, a position he has held for the last four years.

During his public school career, Mr. McKenna has also served students in a variety of capacities, including working as:

Lead teacher for a hybrid alternative school that he helped plan and launch, special education/extended algebra 1 teacher (Idaho Virtual Academy - 2008-13);
Special education teacher/extended school year consulting teacher (Mountain View High - 2013-14);
Special education teacher (Les Bois Jr. High - 2014-16);
Assistant principal, alternative summer high school (Boise School District - 2016 to 2017);
Special education teacher (Fairmont Jr. High - 2016 to 2017); and
Assistant principal (Boise High School 2017 to 2019)

Mr. McKenna has also served on the Boise District’s Junior High Professional Learning committee, the District Calendar committee, the Special Education Compliance Team and he also has experience coaching football, basketball and track.

Mr. McKenna cultivates a positive and responsive school culture of trust and accountability among students, staff and families. He is committed to the District’s student-centered learning system, which provides the support, resources and guidance to see that each and every student can successfully learn and grow.

Mr. McKenna advocates for the success of all students and works collaboratively with all stakeholders to see that students have every opportunity to succeed academically and socially. He works well with staff members to see that they have the resources, support and feedback necessary to succeed. Mr. McKenna is dedicated to the Boise School District’s Vision of preparing each and every student for success in college, career or in life.

Mr. McKenna earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education from Boise State University and a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Boise State University.

Steve Novotny - Principal, White Pine Elementary School

Steve Novotny is a dedicated educator who has served public school students since 1997. He currently serves students and families as Principal of Horizon Elementary School (2015 to present). During his public school career, Mr. Novotny has also worked as:

Assistant Principal, North Jr. High, Boise School District (2011-2015);
Principal, Alternative Summer School, Boise School District (2011);
Assistant Principal, Alternative Summer School, Boise School District (2010);
Assistant Principal, Grace Jordan and Morley Nelson, Boise School District (2010-2011);

Social Studies Teacher, Capital High School, Boise School District (2006-2009);

Social Studies Teacher, Stanwood High School, Stanwood School District (1998-2004); and

Mr. Novotny is an effective instructional leader who believes in building a strong rapport with students, staff, parents and the entire school community to support academic excellence. Principal Novotny is dedicated to the District’s student-centered learning system, which provides the resources, support and guidance to see that each and every student learns successfully. He is also committed to the District's Vision of preparing students for success in life beyond high school, whether it be in college, career or citizenship.

Principal Novotny earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Boise State University, his Master of Arts Degree in Education (Curriculum and Instruction) from Antioch University, Seattle, WA, and his Educational Administration Degree from Northwest Nazarene University.

Heather Scott, Assistant Principal, Boise High School

Heather Scott has served public school students in the Boise School District since 1999. She started her career in the District as a biology and chemistry teacher at Timberline High School and at Borah High School from 2002-2007. In 2007, she started her administrative career in the Boise District and has served in a number of administrative positions since then. Today, she currently serves as Principal at Valley View Elementary School (2014 to 2023).

In addition, she has demonstrated leadership experience working as:

Assistant Principal at South Junior High School (2013-2014);
Assistant Principal, Frank Church High School (2012-2013);
Assistant Principal, Hillside Junior High School/Cynthia Mann Elementary School (2007-2012); and
Interim Assistant Principal, Fairmont Junior High School (2007)

Mrs. Scott has been active in Boise School District’s AVID college preparatory program that prepares students to succeed in college, as well as the District’s English Language Learner program. She has also participated on various District committees and has provided instructional staff with valuable professional development that improves instruction to students. She is a talented administrator who brings a wealth of knowledge, experience and expertise to her new position as Assistant Principal at Boise High School.

Mrs. Scott earned her Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Oregon and Master Degree in Educational Administration from the University of Idaho.
