U.S. Presidential Scholar Candidates Announced

Boise School District is proud to announce the following Boise School District high school seniors have qualified as candidates in the 2024 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, which honors some of our nation's most distinguished graduating high school seniors.

A total of 86 Idaho high school seniors were selected for this recognition. Of those, 24 are from the Boise School District, which represents 28% of Idaho's total U.S. Presidential Scholar Candidates. This is an impressive showing considering Boise School District represents 7% of Idaho's total public school enrollment.

Great Student Award: Capital High School’s Sherlyn Mesillas Becerra wants to create a scholarship fund to help students like her

Sherlyn Mesillas Becerra, a senior at Capital High School, is making an impact in the Latino community and beyond.

Sherlyn has been selected for BoiseDev’s Great Student Award, which selects one student each week for a $200 scholarship based on their good deeds in the community — from helping others, volunteering, and more.

During her sophomore year, Sherlyn founded Boise’s Future Hispanic Leaders of America chapter and is the current president. The FHLA is an Idaho-based organization that pushes Latino youth to reach their academic and life goals. She has also helped raise $500 to support FHLA student activities.

Founding and participating in the FHLA was inspired by her mother.

“My mother was in FHLA when she was in high school,” she said “And she mentioned to me when I went into high school, so 10th grade, and she told me all about her experiences, about this community, about the jokes, about everything that happened really during that time. I wanted to also have a similar experience. So I connected with my Trio teacher and we met up and made a plan.”

She is also a part of the Wassmuth Youth Leadership Program which educates students on human rights issues and is part of the Climate Justice League. Sherlyn has volunteered more than 40 hours in her community. 

When Sherlyn graduates, she wants to pursue psychology or health sciences and eventually go to grad school to continue her education. She says she has applied to all Idaho schools so far. 

Idaho State Academic Championships

The Idaho High School Activities Association is pleased to announce the following Boise School District athletic teams have earned the 2023-24 winter sports Academic State Champions Award sponsored by First Federal Bank. This award is presented to the varsity team in each classification that achieves the highest cumulative grade point average. Congratulations to these student athletes for their academic achievement and commitment to excellence through activities.

With a cumulative grade point average of 3.845, the Timberline High School boys basketball team earned the title of "5A State Academic Champions" for the second consecutive year! The team is coached by Travis Noble.

With a cumulative grade point average of 3.507, the Timberline High School Wrestling Team earned the title of "5A State Academic Champions." The team is coached by Andy DeLoney.

15th Annual Pink Zone Raises Funds/Awareness for Cancer Research

On Friday, January 19th, the Boise High Girls Basketball Team held their 15th Annual Pink Zone event, raising awareness and funds for breast cancer research. Each year, all members of the girls basketball team pitch in to sell raffle tickets and pink shirts leading up to the big day. Final numbers have now been tabulated, and we are proud to report that this year was our MOST SUCCESSFUL PINK ZONE YET. We raised a record-setting $10,707 for the Idaho Chapter of the American Cancer Society. This year brings our 15-year total amount of money raised to $47,500 for breast cancer research!

This event would not be possible were it not for the incredible organizational efforts of Assistant Coach Erinn Della, our wonderful volunteers (Peg Luke, Roanna Barclay, Katie Kappel, Amber Tetrick, and Victoria Sanchez), the rest of our Boise High GBB Coaching Staff, and our dedicated players who walked the stands and sold raffle tickets at so many events. The Girls Basketball Program also wants to acknowledge the generous folks at Del Taco who donated this year's pink shirts, allowing the Brave to raise even more funds for their cause.

We offer free, full-day kindergarten at all Boise School District elementary schools. Trustee Oppenheimer to Step Down from Board

Boise School District Trustee Beth Oppenheimer will be moving to Washington, D.C. this spring to pursue a new career opportunity. She will resign from the Boise School Board of Trustees during the March 11th, 2024 meeting of the Board.

“The seven and half years I’ve served the students and families of the Boise School District as a Trustee have been some of the most rewarding years of my life,” said Trustee Oppenheimer. “I will be moving to Washington, D.C. this spring to continue my career in developing education policy and I intend to submit a formal board resignation at the March Board meeting.”

Boise Quadrant Area Director Appointment

Boise School District is pleased to announce the following appointment of Wendy Johnson, a highly-respected and skilled education leader who will be responsible for leading our schools in the Boise quadrant, effective July 1, 2024.

Wendy Johnson brings a wealth of experience to the role of Boise Quadrant Area Director, having served Idaho’s public school students in a variety of capacities since 1994. She has a strong track record of success in the education field, having served students as a teacher, administrator and as the current Superintendent of the Kuna School District, Kuna, ID.  

Ms. Johnson’s appointment is part of our ongoing commitment to providing a student-focused learning system that ensures the best possible outcomes for all of our Boise School District students.  

“My interest-based approach brings together students, teachers, parents, community members and leaders together to listen and create a plan to do what is right for our students and solve complex problems together,” said Johnson. “I believe in the power of educators to transform the lives of the young people they teach and lead, and believe one of my main responsibilities as an educational leader is to help remove barriers so that teachers can focus on teaching and administrators can focus on supporting their teams.”

Healthy Relationships - Family Night

Boise School District is partnering with the Women's and Children's Alliance to host a family night for high school students and their parents/guardians to talk about healthy relationships. February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month and this family night is a great way to learn about strategies to help your teen and help build healthy relationships. 

This event could also be beneficial for students entering high school next school year. Parents are welcome to attend without their teen.

Parents and teens will go to separate workshops that focus on the following:

• Technology and relationships,
• Setting healthy boundaries in dating relationships,
• Tips on how to have conversations about healthy relationships with your teen, and more!

Understanding Special Education

Please join us for our workshop that helps guide parents through the Special Education Process! This opportunity will be at Garfield Elementary School, 1914 S. Broadway Ave., Boise, ID 83706 on March 5th from 5:30-7pm. We will share helpful information for parents starting the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) process or have gone through it but want to review all of the different components.
