Great Student Award: Timberline Student Jiexi Mei Volunteers at Local Non-Profit

Jiexi Mei, a sophomore at Timberline High School, passes on her talents to the younger generation through dance lessons. 

Mei has been selected for BoiseDev’s Great Student Award — where one student each week is selected for a $200 scholarship based on their good deeds in the community — from helping others, volunteering, and more.



Mei volunteers and dances for the nonprofit Boise Traditional Chinese Dance Group. She first joined and started dancing when she was just five years old. Mei said the group meets weekly to practice and perform at small events like at retirement homes. While she still dances, Mei has now stepped into the role of teacher. She volunteers her time to give the younger children dance lessons.

Grant Supports Dental Clinic & Student Health & Well-Being

Thanks to a grant from Delta Dental of Idaho, the Boise School District's long-standing Dental Clinic will be able to improve dental services to our school children. Recently, Delta Dental approved a $25,000 grant that has been used to purchase much-needed dental x-ray equipment at the District's Dental Clinic (see photos below), which is located on the campus of Whitney Elementary School. The Dental Clinic is free for students of the Boise School District and was originated in 1954 by a group of local dentists who saw the need in the community. The clinic provides:

• Free screening and dental care to students who qualify.
• Free educational materials (posters, toothbrushes, videos) to patients, teachers, school nurses and health educators.



The clinic is operated with community donations and is staffed by local dentists who volunteer each week. The dental clinic is managed by Amy Williams, the Dental Hygienist/Coordinator. 

"This significant contribution will greatly benefit the clinic's efforts in promoting student health and well-being," said Williams. "We extend our deepest gratitude to Delta Dental of Idaho for their commitment to the community and their support in ensuring that students have access to essential dental care. This donation will make a lasting impact on the lives of students in the Boise School District, helping them achieve and maintain good oral health."

Boise School District is hosting with other local non-profits an event for parents about how creating deep connections is a key piece in suicide prevention. Please join us to listen to Dr. Kevin Skinner, a Marriage and Family Therapist, for an evening of education and therapeutic support to empower and give you hope as you support your child's well-being.

This event will be held at South Junior High, 3101 W. Cassia St., Boise, on Thursday, April 18th from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Childcare will be provided.

April 4, 2024 is National School Librarian Day, a day dedicated to recognizing the hard work and dedication of our school librarians who play a crucial role in fostering a love for reading and learning among our students. Join us in celebrating these unsung heroes who work tirelessly to provide access to knowledge and resources that enrich the educational experience.

Boise Police Department honors school librarians at South Junior High School as part of National School Librarian Day. BPD posted the following on their Facebook page: "Our SROs know the importance of providing students with the support they need so they can learn and grow, and the school library staff members work hard every day to organize their libraries and provide assistance and resources to students so they can do just that. We appreciate you all!"

Rigs & Gigs Event Showcases District's Career Technical Education Program

Recently, hundreds of junior high school students from across the Boise School District got an up close look at the wide array of career technical education programs that we offer at our Dennis Technical Education Center.

The event provided an interactive and engaging environment where students could explore various career paths and gain hands-on experience in different technical fields. Through this program, students had the opportunity to learn about in-demand skills, industry trends, and potential career opportunities, setting them on a path towards a successful future. Board Appoints New Trustee

During a Special Board meeting held on Monday, April 1, 2024, members of the Boise School Board appointed a new trustee to fill a vacancy on the Board.

The Board followed a public process in selecting Debbie Donovan (pictured). The Board voted unanimously in favor of selecting Ms. Donovan from among two finalists.

Ms. Donovan will be sworn into office at the regular monthly Board Meeting scheduled to be held on Monday, April 8, 2024. She will serve until the next regular election of the Board of Trustees on Tuesday, September 3, 2024.

Spring Break Powerdown Challenge Results

Over spring break, we were able to track electricity savings of 246,326 kWh when compared to the week before, when school was in session. That is an average of 40% savings across all of our District campuses. Congratulations to all of the following for being able to significantly reduce electricity consumption during spring break:

• Boise quadrant - 33% reduction in electricity usage
• Borah quadrant - 47% reduction in electricity usage
• Capital - 41% reduction in electricity usage
• Timberline quadrant - 43% reduction in electricity usage
• Victory Rd. complex of schools & DSC: 39% reduction in electricity usage

The total savings during spring break across the District is equivalent to the average annual electricity usage of approximately 23 U.S. homes.  The full electricity savings report is attached. Please note that all of our schools in the Victory Rd. complex and the District Services Center are included in the final graph, labeled District Office. Thanks to all who participated and to Idaho Power for helping us track the savings.

In total this year the District has saved 737,068 kWh during these challenges, equivalent to about 70 homes typical annual electricity usage. The energy savings is even more over the past six years. See graphic below. Go Boise Schools!
