A Message About Online Safety from Boise Police Department
|
|
The Boise Police Department is warning students and parents about an increase in sextortion - a scam that BPD says is currently targeting males 14 to 25 years of age on social media. Sextortion is defined as an interaction on social media or dating app (Snapchat, TikTok, Tinder, etc.) where intimate photos are shared, and one person involved in the interaction threatens to release the images unless they are paid money.
"The FBI, in partnership with Homeland Security Investigations and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, is issuing a national public safety alert regarding an explosion in incidents of children and teens being coerced into sending explicit images online and extorted for additional explicit material or money-sextortion," said the FBI in a recently released statement.
Warning signs of those students being targeted include:
- Nervousness, anxiety, depression, heightened emotions
- Isolating self
- Asking for money with no explanation
- Feelings of desperation and hopelessness
- Having suicidal thoughts & self-harming behavior
Please talk with your teens about Sextortion, if they are online they are being targeted.
